4.0 out of 5 stars MATURITY and DISBANDMENT 14 Jan 2010
Although the Undertones are [ rightly] revered for their stunning debut single, Teenage Kicks, these two later albums by this fabulous outfit show a level of vision and maturity many of their peers lacked as punk morphed into the new wave and beyond. Far from being a 3 chord combo, The Undertones became a respected chart act whose later singles rivalled the output of new contemporaries like the Bunnymen, [ just listen to the criminally undervalued Beautiful Friend ,Julie Ocean, and Love Parade singles for proof].

Perhaps, [ wrongly], perceived as cheeky young punks from Derry, the fact that the band soon disgarded their musical shackles and adapted influences from the Sixties, such as Psychedelia and Soul meant that the disperate nature of these two later albums has left them somewhat undiscovered.
Of the two albums, Positive Touch is the more adventurous as the band introduce horns to a vibrant mix of new wave pop that yielded a final decent chart placing single with "It's Going to Happen". Also included are the, superior single recording of Julie Ocean, and a great early [ raw ] version of The Love Parade.
The Sin of Pride, has a more downbeat feel despite its obvious soul, and pop influences. Perhaps the bands imminent demise weighed heavily during the recording sessions. Still as a final effort from a great band, it stands up well, and does not sound like a bunch of musicians just going through the motions, and acts as a fine swansong for The Undertones.

The great news is, however, is that this excellent release combines both albums, demos, single mixes, b sides and sessions in a value filled package.

Two of my favourite Undertones albums in one case. Bought these to upgrade my LPs. Only downside is the listing on MP3 and the cover that downloads. But I am being picky.

These are 2 good albums from The Undertones. The CDs are mastered well, nothing sounds clipped or overly loud. I got mine from import CDs.

If you are a fan of the Ramones, Buzzcocks, The Who, or the early-mid career of The Beatles (Beatles for Sale, Help) you will probably enjoy The Undertones..
