Review

“For these reasons, Lewis’s timely and accessible book will be useful to business leaders and introductory audiences interested less in the science behind positive psychology and appreciative inquiry than in its ready application to the organizational setting.”  ( PsycCRITIQUES , 11 July 2012) "Overall, this is a very readable book, of more interest to the business and organisation leader than to the practising psychologist, for whom the lack of detailed referencing and methodological evaluation would be problematic. However, if, like me, you are not versed in the psychology of work or for that matter, positive psychology, but you do have a practical interest in how organisations (don′t) work, maybe simply as an employee, then this book is a very readable introductory text with lots of ideas for activities and reflective activities as well as further reading." (BPS South–West Review, Spring 2012) "Highly recommended. Business collections serving lower–division undergraduates and above." (Choice, 1 November 2011) "Overall, I would recommend this book to postgraduate researchers, consultants and senior managers who are serious about wanting to invest the time to learn more about the use of positive psychology and appreciate inquiry to improve organisations." (The Psychologist, 1 October 2011) "I believe this book will quickly become a classic reference text. In just over 200 pages Lewis has produced a content rich, accessible work that readers will want to revisit regularly. And I’ve no doubt they will be pleasantly surprised at how much fresh information they glean each time they do." People Management, April 11 "Overall, this is a very readable book, of more interest to the business and organisation leader than to the practising psychologist, for whom the lack of detailed referencing and methodological evaluation would be problematic. However, if, like me, you are not versed in the psychology of work or for that matter, positive psychology, but you do have a practical interest in how organisations (don’t) work, maybe simply as an employee, then this book is a very readable introductory text with lots of ideas for activities and reflective activities as well as further reading." Review

This book offers an inspiring and exciting way forward for work organizations. It shows how we can enhance organizational effectiveness through promoting the well–being and efficacy of the people who make up business organizations: the staff. Grounded in psychology and management research, the book offers leaders, practitioners and employees a clear agenda for creating positive and appreciative cultures that promote performance. — Mike West, Executive Dean and Professor of Psychology, Aston University, UK. Positive Psychology at Work is a much needed book that lifts the lid on how a more appreciative, strengths–focused approach can transform organisations for the better. When organisations and their leaders focus on enhancing the best of what their people have to offer, they enable them to achieve the goals for which they strive, at the same time building the resilience they will need to cope with the changes and challenges of the modern world. I strongly recommend this book for organisational leaders and those who strive to support them. — Alex Linley, Founding Director, Capp, UK

Sarah Lewis explores the facets of Positive Psychology that relate to the world of work. This book is extremely well researched and was a key component in my research for my own theory.

The most interesting part of the book for me is the practical applications of appreciative inquiry in different organisations such as the LCES system used in firefighting.
I can thoroughly recommend this to anyone in the world of education and positive psychology. The quirky and entertaining drawings are well placed and entertaining.

In this book, Sarah Lewis has provided us with an extremely readable and informative study of the current findings of positive psychology as applied in business and organisational life. Her writing style is easy and not troubled by the constant referencing that breaks up the flow of many other, similar texts. A number of cartoons also provide some lighter comment on the text, not that it is at all heavy.

She uses stories and case studies from practitioners who represent the leading edge of practice in Europe, whilst not ignoring the developments and experience of North American colleagues. Research from around the world is referenced, but this is a truly European focused text, and is the better for it, as it avoids some of the excesses that emanate from US practice that European business leaders find it difficult to relate to.

Chapters specifically address positive workplaces, positive engagement and performance, positive communication and decision-making, positive leadership and change, positive sustainable growth, positive relationships at work and positive transformation.

I thoroughly recommend it to anyone seeking to build better outcomes and relationships at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars This has the makings of a classic reference text 12 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Sarah Lewis brings a depth of knowledge to her new work. A qualified psychologist and experienced consultant, she presents complex information fluently and succinctly and succeeds in her intention of persuading the reader that positive psychology can lead to a new era or organisational understanding and practice.

OD practitioners will be particularly interested in the chapter describing how positive psychology can support authentic leadership and successful change. And HR specialists will find plenty to learn from chapters 3, 4 & 7 which collectively focus on positive communications, decision making and enhancing relationships at work.

Organisational leaders cannot fail to be inspired by those further chapters that identify the principles needed to create positive organisations where sustainable growth becomes possible. Personal anecdotes and brief case studies dispersed throughout the book offer confirmation these principles work in practice.

Lewis herself identifies 5 key themes for her work: organisational change as an ethical and moral act; the power of positivity; the need for whole-system approaches to change; the importance of social capital and the need to see organisations as complex adaptive systems. Each is covered in sufficient depth to offer a wealth of insights without any need to "dumb down" complex ideas. In addition two further themes run through her text - those of mindfulness and the value of ambivalence.

I believe this book will quickly become a classic reference text. In just over 200 pages Lewis has produced a content rich, accessible work that readers will want to revisit regularly.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read and very important 22 April 2011
Format:Hardcover
It is rare to pick up a organisation development book which in the first few pages makes you smile, want to read more and make you think !!

This is a very important book in these times as it challenges the OD status quo, provides a different way of working and gives support to those people who want organisations to be different.

We shall be recommending it to all our clients
