Product Description

Product Description

April de Angelis's earlier plays, Ironmistress, Crux and Hush marked the arrival of a bold new talent in the theatre. With The Positive Hour, she more than fulfilled that promise. Miranda is a social worker, with no shortage of problems herself. Her best friend, Emma, is a failed artist in the throes of a mid-life crisis; her lover, Roger, is a frustrated academic, desperately trying to finish his book on Hegel. Personal problems are exacerbated by work and especially, Miranda's relationship with Paula, an unemployed single mother from Lewisham, forced into prostitution to survive. Hilariously funny and quietly disturbing, The Positive Hour brings issues of gender and sexuality into a thoroughly new perspective.

4.0 out of 5 stars The positive hour - A positve good buy!, 29 Mar 2001
By Mr Gavin Kay - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Positive Hour (Faber plays) (Paperback)
The positive hour has been written by one of the best contempory female playwrights, April de Angelis, although not alot is documented about her work. The play was first premiered in London, at the Hampstead theatre on the 27th of February 1997. where it recived a strong welcome from its viewers. The play describes the life of Miranda who is a social worker, as well as helping people with problems she has plenty of her own. Her friend Emma is a failed artist and is in a mid-life crisis with her partner Roger, who is trying to write a book on Hegel. Miranda`s relationship with a client, Paula who is an unemployed, single mother who takes up prostition to survive.(From a review by the out of joint theatre, Hampstead) The play questions the place of liberal values in a world of post new-man. a must for those readers like me that enjoy play that has a comical value and also a hard underpinning social and femenin issue.

happy reading!
