Book Description

Make a Difference During the Most Important Years of Your Child's Life
The months leading up to the birth of a child are filed with joy, dreams, plans—and a few worries. As a caring parent, you want to start your child out in life on the proper foundation. But where do you go for the answers to such questions as: How do I communicate with an infant who doesn't understand words? How can I effectively teach boundaries to my toddler? Should I ever spank my child?
Over the years, millions of parents just like you have come to trust Jane Nelsen's classic Positive Discipline series. These books offer a commonsense approach to child-rearing that so often is lacking in today's world. In Positive Discipline: The First Three Years, you'll learn how to use kind but firm support to raise a child who is both capable and confident. You'll find practical solutions and solid advice on how to:
·Encourage independence and exploration while providing appropriate boundaries
·Use non-punitive methods to instill valuable social skills and positive behavior inside and outside the home
·Recognize when your child is ready to master the challenges of sleeping, eating, and potty training, and how to avoid the power struggles that often come with those lessons
·Identify your child's temperament
·Understand what the latest research in brain development tells us about raising healthy children
·And much, much more!
Containing real-life examples of challenges other parents and caregivers have faced, Positive Discipline: The First Three Years is the one book that no parent should be without.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really useful suggestions for toddlers 6 Oct. 2010
Format:Paperback
I got this when my son was about 1 year old, and it was a great read to get my head around how I want to hand disapline as I didn't fancy a constant stream of no, no, no or shouting or just 'being bossy' all day. It talks a lot about teaching, viewing life from your child's perspective etc. Some of the techniques are more suitable for older toddlers - more along 18-24 months or even older. But you can put the basic ideas into plan and it just helps give you confidence to decide how you are going to learn growing up together (if that makes sense!). And it might depend on your child as to how much they understand. But it was really, really helpful and definitely a good guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 13 Nov. 2012

This book has been great so far (I still have a few chapters to go). It emphasizes learning about early child development in order to understand your child better. The authors write a lot about "developmental appropriateness" and what you can realistically expect from your child in terms of behavior and accomplishments. I initially went searching for a book that would back up my intuitive awareness that my son (11 months) cannot understand the meaning of "no". I was receiving a little unwanted advice from his grandmother (my mother-in-law) who was insisting that I MUST say no to my son otherwise he would rule the roost. This book has more than met my needs because it confirmed my intuitions and provided me with the knowledge I needed to boost my confidence in my parenting. Now when grandma butts in with her endless stream of advice I just smile and nod and know in my heart (and my head) that I am doing just fine.

It had also helped me to remain patient and be more understanding of my little guy. Can I really expect him to stop crawling over to the kitchen drawers and taking everything out of them because I said "no" and provided a lecture on why he shouldn't do that? Obviously not, but I can put a safety latch on the drawer, provide constant supervision, and take him back to his toys.

There are chapters dedicated to eating, sleeping, and potty training which aren't any use to me now, but I have a feeling I will be referring to "Positive Discipline" frequently in the years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very handy and twice read now 27 Jun. 2013

This book has been criticised by for not being attachment parenting by those who expected it to be, but I'm not one of them! Clearly it is not an AP book but I wouldn't say it is anti-AP either. All the authors do is say that too many parents do co-sleeping and extended bf not by choice but by default, and I have seen quite a few on TV TBH, hence they end up calling Supernanny.
I personally liked the fact that Jane Nelson pointed out that towards age one, babies will go through a stage when they don't ask for breast or bottle, and it's the golden occasion for weaning. Hands up, I thought my DD needed milk so I didn't "force" it on her, but I was the one in a routine who failed to spot that she was ready to wean herself of it. And yes, a lot of parents of children well above the age of 2 have to go desperately want the bottles away but face a power struggle because they missed the spot.
Otherwise, that book is very against spanking, punishment, reward charts, coercive potty-training and eating, so that matches my own beliefs. My only bit of criticism would be that I would have liked the authors to say more about communication in those first 3 years, especially for the preverbal stage where I still am.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really enjoy this book 5 Sept. 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book really suits my developing parenting style and is an enjoyable and easy read.
Helps you to get into the mind-set of your child and give simple but effective ways of dealing with all those little incidents you have with a young child around.
In a lot of ways it focuses of changing the way YOU think about the situation rather than modification of your child behaviour. I would recommend it to any like minded parents.
