Book Description

Oct 2011
Acclaimed playwright Laura Wade explores the lives of the young, wealthy and privileged. Are the high-jinks of the tail-coated Bullingdon boys the last gasp of a dying breed? In an oak-panelled room in Oxford, ten young bloods with cut-glass vowels and deep pockets are meeting, intent on restoring their right to rule. Members of an elite student dining society, the boys are bunkering down for a wild night of debauchery, decadence and bloody good wine. But this isn t the last huzzah: they re planning a takeover. Welcome to the Riot Club. Posh is the first main stage play to have been developed by the Royal Court's Rough Cuts programme, a way of creating new work through integrated collaboration and exploration.

Review

...a tour de force. It's terribly funny or rather, funny and terrible. It packs the nastiest punch. --The Observer

While Wade's play reminds us that many of the upper-class continue to enjoy the sound of broken glass, its success lies in harpooning the way power operates through a succession of nods and winks in our supposedly open, egalitarian society. 4 stars --The Guardian

The West End version of Laura Wade's Royal Court hit from two years ago is a significant improvement on the original thanks to a necessarily updated script and a rather sharper focus… Posh is a riot. --British Theatre Guide --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

10 people on stage through the whole thing talking, and it never gets boring! Amazing dialogue. Very visual. Caustic. Worth reading.

1.0 out of 5 stars To be avoided 22 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Again, I found this play to lack any dramatic merit; its content was thin, its plot was non-existent and I binned it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read this and weep... 14 May 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Ah me... in the wake of the general election 2010, read this and weep. It's a very well written play, and because of that you can almost watch the action in your mind as you read it. Okay, so these priviledged, monied, entitled Oxbridge types are now running the country - Cameron, Osbourne, Boris Johnson, Clegg... and all the other poshboys who probably got up to the same shenanigans as the yahoos in this play: an evening out with a kind of Bullingdon Club style nob-mob who trash a country pub, hire a "prozzer", insult the landlord and then get out a thick wad of money to put it all right. Marvellous stuff, it should transfer to the West End, but I fear it's too late to act as a warning, as the country has now elected this bunch and all their cronies to run the country....
