This is Volume 2 of Adrian Waller's Japan Times Weekly writings. Be sure you'll also get Volume 1 "Being Here".
I highly recommend this book if you're interested in Japan and want to know what it's like for a westerner to live there. It's a joy to read - being both very interesting and funny.

Since there's no information here, from the backcover of my book:
" This little book contains some of the finest and most adventurous journalism ever published in Japan - a collection of 60 or so columns and a handful of larger articles Adrian Waller wrote for The Japan Times Weekly between the spring of 1990 and the summer of 1992.
Powerful exposés on everything from racism and the abuse of women, to the gentle joshing of Japanese traditions and some uproariously funny personal experiences, these sparkling works represent a logical follow-up to Waller's Being Here, a Western jounalist's view of Japan - an ealier collection of columns that enjoyed instant success.
In the foreword to Being Here, novelist Robert J. Collins likened Waller's humurous and irreverent work to "genius in artistry", and never was a description more apt. In Portraits of Japan, however, Waller surpasses himself as he explains, with wit, insight, warmth, and deft literary skills, the "strange paradoxes" that make modern-day Japan what it is."
