5.0 out of 5 stars A "can't put down" book, great from start to finish., 10 April 2001
By A Customer
Essential Reading for a Holiday, Train...you cannot put this book down, if you liked Goodfellas (or books of that ilk) then you'll love this, see Harold grow from a boy to a man in the roughest parts of New York mixing with gangsters and juvenile delinquents, this book looks at the progression of a criminal psychosis Perry, in his only novel, constructs a world without right or wrong, just a world that is

Most books leave you with questions needing answers at the end but this left me with the desire to read it again and again (on my forth time now!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Portrait of a young man drowning, 27 Nov 2002
By Trevor Little (streatham, london United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Portrait of a young man drowning was recomended to me by a good friend, and so i took this book on a holiday, and started to read on the first day sitting on a sun bed by the pool, and not stopping.
Captivating is the best word i can use to describe the only book written by Charles Perry, his life was struck by the tragic murder of his son, and then he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The book is set in a mob run 50's New York, and takes you through the life of a young man named 'Harry Odum'. Harry is inspired by the local mobsters and works his way into their trust. The book is an amazingly written dive into the twisted psyche of a young man caught up in a fate he cannot control.
It is a tradegy that Charles Perry only had time to write one book, but read it and be thankful that he did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pick this book up at your peril., 12 Jul 2002
By S. J. Stopps "sandalhead" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I opened it and started to casually read a couple of lines on a warm Sunday afternoon, and that was pretty much it. The book was glued to my hands until I finished it. It is a truly compulsive read.

Perry leads you though the live of Harry as he slowly looses his grip on reality, and struggles to come to terms with his relationship with his overbearing mother. He's simple use of prose enables you to get inside Harry 'the cats' head, and lets the story do the work.

OK so the gangster sub plot may not be to everyone's taste, but this book has something special. I could say much more, but I think it is better that you find out for yourselves. Just make sure that you have time on your hands.
