5.0 out of 5 stars The next best thing to being in England..., 8 Nov 2003

Wow! Heaven on earth...and fully justifying the price tag.
Caroline Hyman's photographs have been exhibited in London, and her works consistently reveal her mastery of character, of nature (fruits, plants, trees), of line, detail and light.

Here she distils the heart and soul of the English landscape of the Chilterns (Oxford area). Yet however spectacular, the photographs radiate sensitivity, intelligence and a sure artistic instinct.

A beautiful display book to indulge in, and also makes a great gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly evocative portrait of rural England, 19 July 2003
By
Rupert Godman (Sussex, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Portrait of a Valley: The Hambleden Valley in Photographs (Hardcover)
This highly evocative and nostalgic book captures the magic and beauty of the Oxfordshire countryside in a series of wide-ranging and original photographs. As well as hauntingly beautiful landscape shots, the capturing of many a countryside event in progress, and photographs of some of Hambleden's most ancient pubs and churches, it is the people of the valley who feature most strongly in Caroline Hyman's book. Many of the farmers and tradesmen she photographs have lived and worked in this valley for centuries, as have their families for centuries before them. How wonderful that such time-honoured traditions persist in pockets of our countryside like this splendid, time-capsuled, bucolic haven called Hambleden Valley.

5.0 out of 5 stars An exquisite photographic essay of rural England, 17 July 2003

Here are the people, places and events in the modern life of a unique fold in the Chiltern Hills - an invaluable evocation of its villages and valley in the first year of the new century and the third millennium.
For those who live in places like Hambleden or Fingest, Fawley or Medmenham, Skirmett,Turville or Frieth, here are familiar faces and ancient vistas, for those who visit this enchanted vale, here are comfortable taverns and quiet times. For all who cherish the Chilterns, here are timeless faces and places - a vision and a waking dream of near meadows, still stream and rolling hillside.
