More than a coffee table book - a real page turner!,

I received the above book as a present from my dear wife knowing my keen interest in countryside pursuits. The book which is beautifully illustrated takes the reader through the many processes which go into making a day's "driven shot", from the farmer, who raises the game birds, through the skills of the craftsmen gunmakers who patiently produce to the most exacting standards custom-built shotguns which are passed through generations from fathers to sons, to the gamekeepers, dog breeders, handlers and beaters who are at the very heart of the day's shoot. It is fascinating and informative book. I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the countryside. More than a coffee-table book, although exceptionally beautifully illustrated - a real page turner!

Caroline Hyman's new book 'Portrait of a Shoot' captures the wonderful sport of driven shooting in a series of beautifully memorable photographs and accompanying text. Through vivid depictions of the landscape, wildlife and the sport itself, the reader is given both the stunning backdrop to this English field sport and an understanding of its myriad rituals. We meet the many individuals involved in the sport, from the keeper and pheasant rearer to the gun maker and beater. Many of their families have been involved with the sport for generations, and it is through their life stories that we glean fascinating insights into the sport.Those wishing to know more about driven shooting in England will find this book not only instructive but utterly delightful.
