Disappointed,
By
This review is from: Portrait Photography: Secrets of Posing and Lighting (Lark Photography Book) (Paperback)
This is the first book I have ever read on flash/studio photography and I am a little disappointed. The coverage of equipment is quite sparten, with no real guidance on how to use flash meters.
The various lighting set-ups lacked diagrams, which I would have prefered to see (as a newbe). If I had had a chance to look at this book in a bookshop first, before ordering it, I would not have chosen it.

This review is from: Portrait Photography: Secrets of Posing and Lighting (Lark Photography Book) (Paperback)
This is the first time I've given less than a 4 star review. This book is absolutely awful. If you're looking for incredibly corny poses that look like they're out of an American Sears catalogue from the early 90s, then you need this book. If, like me, you want anything but that, this book might not work for you. First there are two pages of a 20-something year old woman inexplicably cuddling gerbera daisies whilst wearing her hair in pigtails and dressed like Sporty Spice in her heyday. Then there are awkward explanations of why you might need an SLR camera to do quality portrait photography, followed by the film vs. digital recap. Who in their right mind would purchase any of the lighting equipment discussed in this book when shooting with a film 35mm point and shoot? Am I missing something here?
Some of the descriptions of lighting equipment are quite suspect (gobo and speedlite are particularly strange). Then there are strangely soft focus pictures of an angry looking boy in a red silk shirt, accompanied by directions as to how to make your subject look more feminine. Book is absolutely awful - I feel like it's probably some very sweet old guy who wrote it who hasn't a clue, so I don't want to be mean, but oh my. I'm glad I borrowed this book off a friend to try before buying!

This is an excellent guide to portrait photography. I've bought several books and I wish I'd seen this book first.
Only a small proportion of the book is about posing but what there is is very useful. The photos generally have a very contempory feel to them. Most of the book is about studio lighting and is well written and illustrated. Two very minor criticisms - the book is peppered with annoying typos that disrupt the flow and diagrams showing the lighting for each picture would have been useful. But overall the book is excellent so these don't matter very much. All in all, highly recommended.
