I agree with some of the other reviewers that there is some great information in this book, the anatomy chapter is well presented and provides a few tips that have really improved my portrait drawings but examples of the authors paintings are poor.
The anatomy chapter uses photographs of casts and drawings to great effect and throughout the book there are examples from many great modern artists.
The last section of the book focus's on step by step demonstrations by the author and all are lifeless and dull, many don't even capture a good likeness which is very surprising considering the books topic. The inclusion of the authors work took the shine off the book for me, if I buy a book about portrait painting I want to know that the person teaching me can actually do what they're trying to teach.
There can be no doubting the authors knowledge of techniques and materials and on that basis the book is useful to beginners and people wanting to learn about oil painting techniques, however if you know how to handle paint and have a book on anatomy you may find that there's little new to you in this book.
Before buying this book I recommend that you use Amazons look inside feature to view page 102 & 103 which provides good information about critical points to a likeness, you can also view the last section of the book and see the authors paintings.
If you want a book focused on just classic painting techniques without the portrait section I recommend Classical Painting Atelier by Juliette Aristides, it's cheaper and contains better painting technique information.
