Biography

The tumultuous relationship Marilyn Manson has cultivated with the public through his genre-defying music and anti-status quo message of thinking for oneself has resulted in sold-out tours, protests, legal battles, adoration, hate, more than 50 million records sales, award-winning distilled spirits, several Grammy nominations and, most importantly, a long list of some of the most enduring and ... Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Every parent's nightmare and every teenager's dream band, Marilyn Manson take no prisoners on their blistering and brutal Trent Reznor-produced debut. Aiming to shock and rock simultaneously, Portrait scores high marks in both arenas. Manson and his grand grimoire take Alice Cooper's tongue-in-cheek mix of glam and death rock to the nth degree with their vision of youth gone wild, personified on cuts like "Cake and Sodomy" and "Lunchbox", a schoolyard revenge fantasy gone horribly awry. One of the most original, hardest rocking albums recorded in the 1990s, Portrait of an American Family is a hallmark of the industrial/metal genre, but not for those who are easily offended. --Gail Worley

5.0 out of 5 stars All in all, a great album. 16 Sep 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
For me, this is the best Marilyn Manson album. despite being a big fan, i find a lot of his later stuff slightly drony and depressing-especially some of the tracks on holy wood.
This album has everything i like about marilyn manson- clever, shocking lyrics accompanied by heavy music. there is not a bad track on this album but there are several brilliant ones- cake and sodomy and get your gunn are two examples.
If you havent heard much of Marilyn Manson's work before and you think he's just a scary freak- buy this album, you will be pleasantly surprised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manson at his/their most original 4 May 2006
By Saul
Format:Audio CD
This was the last Marilyn Manson album I bought, thinking that it would be quite basic compared to their later albums, but I was wrong!

This is by far the most original album Marilyn Manson has made. In places it's quite funny too! The intro, Boat Trip, sets the tone of the album (the lyrics are taken from Roald Dahl's Charlie And The Chocolate Factory!) as a weird, warped kind of acid trip. The whole album is quite psychedelic, with weird sounds all over the place.

The music in general is more old school rock'n'roll, a kind of early Alice Cooper for the nineties. You would not have guessed that this band would go on to make Antichrist Superstar! Tracks like Cake And Sodomy, Lunchbox, Dope Hat and Snake Eyes and Sissies are superbly written rock'n'roll songs, which have hardly a hint of the Industrial sound that was to follow. The whole album has it's tounge firmly in it's cheek, with Manson himself playing a kind of weird boogyman throughout.

The album has a very White Zombie feel to it, but not quite as heavy and with deeper lyrics. Much weirder though!

Highly recommended, if you like weird rock music!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dubut from the god of f**k! 15 May 2003
Format:Audio CD
Much more simplistic both musically and lyrically than later releases would be this album basically sets the tone for all that would follow. There is no hint of Mansons later, glammier sounds on this release - the music is hard, heavy and aggressive. My personal favourite is the initial song 'Cake and Sodomy' which has to rate as one of his best songs ever, and also acts as a forerunner for the lyrics that would follow on later albums with no issue considered taboo. Simple, hard and best played loud I would recommend this album to anyone who likes metal or punk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr Manson Makes His First Mark: 19 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
The first full album from Marilyn Manson produced by his on/off freind Trent Reznor. This is Manson in his 'Evil Willy Wonka' stage and he gives us some amazing songs to kickstart his flight to the top. 'Cake and Sodomy' , 'Lunch Box' , 'Misery Machine' , 'Get Your Gunn' and 'Organ Grinder' are all bonafied Manson classics. Each and every song on this album has something going for it, there is not a bad song here.

Manson always has had alot to see - 'Get Your Gunn' and 'Lunchbox' are classic rebellious anthems which have helped many people though tough times.

If you haven't heard Manson before, start here and work your way up.

This album contains some brilliant tracks, but too many are just plain rock as opposed to MMs usual mix of heavy metal, industrial and glam which worked so well on the later trilogy. The album is very weird, and some of the tracks are spoilt by screams of pain and other weird things, especially Dogma. Cake and Sodomy is a brilliant track, whether you can stomach the lyrics or not. Organ Grinder rides the border between carnival and serious perfectly. Dope Hat is the best on the album alongside C&S, whilst Get your Gunn and Dogma are heavy, shoutey and utterly enjoyable. Unfortunately, the other tracks, Lunchbox, Cyclops, Wrapped in Plastic,My Monkey Sweet Tooth and Snake Eyes and sissies are too dreary, especially the last two, and too much like the old spooky kids stuff which isnt very good. Misery Machine is somewhere in the middle, though the 13 minute telephone ringing followed by a message left by an irate parent was a good way of showing the world the band just didn't care. Along with Smells Like Children, this album gave many people the image of Manson being sick and twisted. A shame, because Antichrist, Mechanical and Holy Wood are pure genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the lot personally 31 Aug 2004
Format:Audio CD
I used to be a big manson fan, the other albums such as antichrist superstar and mehcanical animals used to be my favourite albums, they are alot more slick and shiny compared. Those albums represent the marilyn manson everybody knows today, but this album keeps shouting me back. The actual music on this album is plain old badass hard rock, infact its kinda grungy, its a hell of a lot rawer and for me thats better and more authentic. Theres some great guitar work on this one also.
The songs are of the same kind of make up of the later stuff, but its much more jaged and less ironed out, its almost like this is the In Utero to the Nevermind, Nevermind representing mansons later stuff, being all cleaned up and radio friendly, and this, the less cheesy more hardcore selection.
Songs to reccomend are, Lunchbox, My Monkey (an abscure yet fun song using vocal pitch shifting, sounds funny!!) Cake and Sodomy, Get Your Gun. The rest are great to, Manson uses some effective yet simple lyrics in all the songs. This album will have u singing the random lyrics all day, and ull find urself scrambling home to put the CD on to find that damn track thats kept u goin all day in ur head.
Id totally recomend this album to all guitarists even if u dont think u like manson, i guarentee theres gonna be a nice lead break here n there that ur gonna love. I recomend this album to anyone who jus likes plain old heavy ass rock n roll cause this album is gonna make u wanna party, give this manson album a chance. honestly..
