Product Description

This sumptuous adaptation of Henry James's enormous novel, is full of psychological dramas. With a firm idea how music would chronicle Isabel's destiny, director Jane Campion called upon Wojciech Kilar for that which his music achieves so well. In his own words: "I think the best film music repeats its basic themes--each time with small variations." His writing style of taking a motif and spinning us around and around with it is perfectly suited to the idea of a turn-of-the-century woman walking circles within an enclosed world. There's at least three primary themes represented on the album. The title cue is perhaps the most outstanding: strings swirl upwards to a peak, before swiftly moving down to the start of the piece to begin again with an additional layer. If you know his score to Bram Stoker's Dracula this description will be familiar. The method is also applied to the reed ensemble that work the theme introduced in "Flowers Of Firenze", and for the aptly named "Twilight Cellos". With a delightful Schubert interlude midway, this is symphonic film music at its most soulful. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best soundtracks of the past ten years 7 April 2006
By Edward Aycock - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Blending an original score by Wojciech Kilar with complementary pieces by Schubert, this recording creates a definite mood. One of my favorite original pieces is the opening track, "My Life Before Me" which is so evocative that it's hard not to be touched by it in some way. This is not a sountrack full of generic, John Williams-like orchestrations; rather, each piece stands on its own.

It's not necessary to be familiar with either the film or Henry James' original novel to appreciate this great soundtrack; while I may have some problems with the creative choices made by the director of the film, this disc is one of my all-time favorites of any genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars extremely touching 27 Feb 2000
By Lilien Runje - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I was first introduced to this movie by my aunt Sandra who claimed I would love it. I am a "period" film fanatic and she knew it would "get to me" eventually. It wasn't until I went off to college that I could actually even consider renting the film while I worked at a video store. When i finally brought it back to my dorm room tired and worn out from a hard days of work, I became mesmerized and awakened by such a film. It couldn't have been as touching if it weren't for the blissful, poignant music. My heart ached when I heard the score. I knew after that I had to purchase this soundtrack. It is must for anyone who likes film scores and the movie itself is a must for any female who wants to know what an honest to God lady is.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best film scores in 1996 1 Nov 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Wojciech Kilar has composed one of the best and most beautiful film scores of 1996 with "Portrait of a Lady" whose main title came to him on a plane from Australia back to Poland. If you love exquisite flute and string writing then this one is for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Gorgeous! 23 Dec 2005
By W. Pender - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I heard this music playing in the background while browsing in a record store. I promptly went to the counter and inquired about it. I came home with this prize of a score. One of the most beautiful I've ever heard. The film was mediocre but the music saves it. Mr. Kilar hits a jackpot!
