These small black and white drawings revel more of the skill and talent of Sargent than some of the paintings. For those who appreciate drawing skill and portraiture they have a fluency that it is pleasing to refer to and for those studying Sargent it is a very useful insight.

If you don't know much about John Singer-Sargent then this is a good book to start with a it's inexpensive and contains a large number of illustrations which introduce his style. To me, his drawings seem to have a fresh and vibrant look which matches the age, the places he lived in and people whose portraits he painted. This is most evident in his paintings, but if you start with his portrait drawings, I think you'll gain a greater appreciation of his paintings.

Sargent is amazing and his drawings are perfect....would reccommend buying this and Hans Holbien...if you want to learn to draw better in that style...

This book is large format (although thin, more like a booklet). The images are simply breath-taking. It's great to see large A4 versions of his drawings, especially the charcoals. I hadn't realised until I saw them at this size just how emotional his portrait drawings are. Really stunning. Could look at this for hours. So glad I bought it!

I ordered a new book - so maybe it is a reprint of original which would have been better quality. It hurts my eyes - the drawings are absolutely fantastic - but the quality of reproduction is cheap. The resolution is very poor, the black is only black in sketches- full on finished drawings are washed out and there is no gradation of gray-black, and one can not see the stroke of the pencil or charcoal (Actually there also is no description of the medium used). Paper quality is somewhere between office printer paper and newspaper kind. It is a disappointment, if one want to sit down to look close and analyze the drawings.
