Poetrait Drawing 25 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I needed to draw portraits correctly for a personal project. I thought `Portrait Drawing, A step by step Art instruction Book', looked the ideal solution.

Portrait Drawing starts by breaking down the rendering of the face into sections; mouth, nose, eye, and ear using four panels per facial feature as though you were looking over the shoulder of the noted artist John Lawn. Each panel is given a full description using clear narration as the section of the face in question is demonstrated. Then the above is repeated from a variety of angles, and finally the full head is demonstrated from the front and side view of the head.

After the basic fundamentals, John moves to the complete portrait demonstrations. This section comprises of ten sitters from various angles, ages, racial and ethnic types. Each of these step-by-step demonstrations shows every drawing operation, from the first stroke on the paper to the last using seven panels with a full description to each panel.

I have waited along time for a publication to do on the inside what is claimed on the front cover. "Portrait Drawing a step-by-step art instruction book", achieves this. If the cover price of this book was three times the cost I would have felt I had got good value.. Fabulous

Portrait Drawing: A Step-by-step Art Instruction Book (Artists Library)
Wonderful book for both the beginner and those with more experience. Packed with information which includes sketching materials and what you'll need to get started. There are sections of the book talking you through each individual feature, and how to alter it for skin tone, etc., plus the finished sketch. You will learn how to use paper with different finishes to alter the effect of your drawing and also how to use graphite and charcoal. Start at your own pace with the rudimentary shapes and graphs, individual features or go for broke and begin your complete portrait, it's all in here for you, I really like this book and I'd be happy to recommend it to everyone.

Very Good 7 Oct 2011

This is not a book for anyone that has never picked up a pencil before but is supportive enough to cover a lot of the basics. The illustrations are clear and straight forward if a little difficult to copy. This is by no means and "Easy into Drawing" kind of book and respect is shown that the reader does not want to do cartoon or line drawing, but you would probably pick up that notion from just gazing at the cover. Overall a good book.
