Half-good, half bad, set the scene for future albums,

This album contains some brilliant tracks, but too many are just plain rock as opposed to MMs usual mix of heavy metal, industrial and glam which worked so well on the later trilogy. The album is very weird, and some of the tracks are spoilt by screams of pain and other weird things, especially Dogma. Cake and Sodomy is a brilliant track, whether you can stomach the lyrics or not. Organ Grinder rides the border between carnival and serious perfectly. Dope Hat is the best on the album alongside C&S, whilst Get your Gunn and Dogma are heavy, shoutey and utterly enjoyable. Unfortunately, the other tracks, Lunchbox, Cyclops, Wrapped in Plastic,My Monkey Sweet Tooth and Snake Eyes and sissies are too dreary, especially the last two, and too much like the old spooky kids stuff which isnt very good. Misery Machine is somewhere in the middle, though the 13 minute telephone ringing followed by a message left by an irate parent was a good way of showing the world the band just didn't care. Along with Smells Like Children, this album gave many people the image of Manson being sick and twisted. A shame, because Antichrist, Mechanical and Holy Wood are pure genius.

Portrait is an interesting Manson album, showing how his excellent song writing in its earliest stages. It has classic Manson songs such as Cake And Sodomy, Lunchbox, Get Your Gunn and the cover of a Charles Manson song, My Monkey. The album while not his worst (Smells Like Children), is rather bland and unpolished however, having an almost grunge like feel to it which may be odd for for those more used to Mansons alternative metal from Antichrist and Holywood. An album worth having for those wanting to have all of Mansons best songs in their collection, but if you want MM's best stuff buy Antichrist/Mechanical Animals/Holywood.

For me, this is the best Marilyn Manson album. despite being a big fan, i find a lot of his later stuff slightly drony and depressing-especially some of the tracks on holy wood. This album has everything i like about marilyn manson- clever, shocking lyrics accompanied by heavy music. there is not a bad track on this album but there are several brilliant ones- cake and sodomy and get your gunn are two examples. If you havent heard much of Marilyn Manson's work before and you think he's just a scary freak- buy this album, you will be pleasantly surprised.
