PORTLANDIA is the hit sketch comedy series created, written by,and starring Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownstein (WILD FLAG, Sleater-Kinney vocalist/guitarist).

The show is driven by a series of hilarious character-based shorts all of which take place in "Portlandia", the creators' dreamy and absurd hipster rendering of Portland, Oregon where 90's culture reigns supreme and political correctness is all the rage.

Armisen and Brownstein play an array of colourful and unique characters with guest stars including Selma Blair, Heather Graham, Kyle MacLachan, Tim Robbins, Gus Van Sant, Jeff Goldblum to name a few.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Comedy Sketches 22 Oct 2012
By Kate
Portlandia is a fast-paced comedy show, featuring short sketches. Set in Portland Oregon, the viewer is introduced to an assortment of characters, all who may in some way represent the kind of person who lives in Portland, or perhaps the kind of perhaps we think might. There are punks, hippies, smart executive couples, eccentrics, feminist booksellers, wholefood market assistants, obsessive people, kinky people, the earnest and the inept. Some, not all, characters are on-going and appear in most episodes. My favourite sketches are those featuring two women who run women & women first bookstore. They are archetypal feminists, who seem today rather out of place and old-school, but their characters are quite complex and well-meaning.

I hope more viewers discover this show - it is better than a lot of comedy shown on bigger networks, in my opinion. It helps that Carrie Brownstein is a musician because one appealing feature of the show is the number of musician guests that are written in for cameo roles, from Aimee Mann to the lead singer of Pearl Jam, who's name I forget right now!

Watch this if you like off-beat, edgy, witty comedy that's got a beating heart and doesn't mind who you are so long as you find less-ordinary people are your folk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Celebrating the Absurd! 21 Dec 2013

Was a big Sleater Kinney fan and love Wild Flag too. When I saw Carrie Brownstein was involved I had to buy it. Lovingly sends up overly zealous "alternative" lifestyles in Portland. Exaggerates its characters to the nth degree. Some great guest artists such as Steve Buscemi, Aimee Mann, Heather Graham, Gus van Sant, Edward James Olmos and Kyle McLachan as the Mayor. Great fun and makes you think about getting too precious with regard to subcultures. It's a blast!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb American comedy 10 July 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
As a Brit, I had heard mention of Portlandia every now and then from my American colleagues. Keen to understand why my friends were obsessed with this comedy, and decided to jump in!
I was pleasantly surprised - from the opening sketch I was hooked and I watched these two seasons (and the third) in a week. The recurring characters are varied and interesting without becoming cliches of themselves (as something like Little Britain quickly became). The sketches can be quirky and interesting and there are some fantastic subtle parodies throughout the series.
I really would encourage you to watch these series. Ironically, I really want to visit Portland now - just to see how true it all is!

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not be deceived. 9 Dec 2012

Another reviewers had it correct. This box set is a trick. While the picture makes it looks like a normal, two-box set, in reality it's one normal set and shoddy paper envelope type thing. I mean really, why do I want to pay for a series set that's going to get scratched just from me pulling it out of the box. So disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Packaging for the 2-Pack is shoddy 29 Oct 2012

Season 1 is in a standard DVD box. Season 2 is in a cardboard digi-pack of different height/width than that of a standard box, and it's thinner than it appears in the picture. It's not exactly a matching set. They are packaged together with a strip of paper around them, and shrink-wrapped. When mine arrived, the Season 2 digi-pack was bending under the pressure of the shrink-wrap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sooo funny 10 Jan 2013

The DVDs were well protected and in tact. They play well. This is a great comic show. Fred and Carrie are extremely talented and brilliant in a comic style reminiscent of Tracy Ulman , The Kids In The Hall and a little (benign) splash oh Sasha Cohen Baren (Borat). My boyfriend and I are addicted to this show!
