This is an enjoyable adventure where the storyline develops and unfolds at a very satisfying pace. The author has done a masterful job in making 'Portal of Evil' seem far longer than its 400 paragraphs/sections. Your journey will take you through a whole variety of territories and environments, including another world. As such there is an epic feel to this adventure. The author has added to this by filling his adventure with a variety of creatures that are generally unusual or different to what you might expect to encounter. The prehistoric beasts that are invading Khul are not just the typical T-Rexs or tricerotops, but rarer dinosaurs that receive less press, such as the struthiomimus. The slave warriors that accompany them are not your average shambling zombies (as you will no doubt discover) and seem to share a telepathic link. The transmogrification of elves, humans and goblins into beasts adds to the interest these creatures arrouse.

There are a lot of goblins but these are not treated in standard ways as they are victims as much as the humans. These are goblins who you assist, befriend and fight alongside. I particularly enjoyed the battle with the goblins against the prehistoric troglodytes. It is not many gamebooks where you can receive a blessing from a goblin deity.

The most unusual aspect of this well thought out and original adventure is that the major villain is not the typical evil sorcerer or undead/demonic creature. Instead it is the stone portal of the title. This is a novel idea that makes this gamebook stand out from its competitors. The portal is surprisingly disconcerting considering it is an inanimate object.

Taking the correct route through this adventure is reasonably tricky.

Very well narrated story and a well treated plot although classical at the beginning. Too bad it is limited to the standard "Fighting Fantasy" format of 400 paragraphes. It a few words : "we want more of this !".

This book is an exceptional example of the genre,. The size of the book is a lot bigger then most other FF's. This is because there is so much description relating to the life found within the forest, the pervasive threat and the characters experiences through the wilderness. Each section is fleshed out vividly and the art is of a high quality. The set pieces arent the most overblown high fantasy but seem real and achievable. With just a sword and some good decision making you will go a long way in this adventure. I believe it succeeds in being fun throughout and the difficulty level is spot on. If an adventure complete with unexplained dinosaurs and zombies seems like your thing with a well concieved story then i recommend this wholeheartedly.
