5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, Demonic, Quotable 29 Sep 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Dorothy has a possession of the english language that is almost demonic, and coupled with her insight into the weaknesses of human nature (not to mention her own), her prose and poetry are witty, cutting and hilarious. Her poetry is short and quotable and her short stories explored the mundane and ridiculous of American Life far earlier than most writers. My favorites, however, are her book and play reviews. They are genius, and can leave you rolling on the floor. This is my favorite collection of Dorothy's work. I have found that collections of only poetry or short stories soon became tedious and extremely depressing (I wonder if Dorothy on Prozak would have produced such great work). This is an excellent volume for those just discovering Dorothy, and great to keep handy for a "little read."

5.0 out of 5 stars great 31 Mar 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Parker's poems are short, sparse, and witty; I can hardly ever sit down with this book and not feel compelled to read a particulary memorable gem aloud. Her short stories reveal surprising depth, and her "Constant Reader" reviews (especially the AA Milne ones!) are a real riot. I've found that it's an excellent bedside companion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Criminally Ignored 6 July 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent introduction to one of the century's sharpest, funniest writers. Her real talents lay in the acidic theatre and book reviews, which are never less than 2000-word masterpieces.

The poetry is much too self-conscious to be great (but then a lot of poetry has that effect on me) and the short stories are rather over-egged puddings, but you could still buy this book for the reviews alone.

I only wish I had Dorothy's talent for book-reviewing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dorothy Parker 26 July 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've always enjoyed the poems of Dorothy Parker so thought I'd try out this book to see what the rest of her writing was like. I am only half way through at the moment. The stories are pretty good and some of the characters' behaviour translates easily to modern day relationships. Worth a read if you like short stories as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read 28 Jan 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I am proud to have this work on my bookcase... as dog-eared and falling apart as it is. It is one of my favourite volumes, in its entirety - the poems, short stories, and columns. I wish I could write like that. An amazing book by an underappreciated and misunderstood author.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most readable 20th century writer 14 Aug 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Dorothy Parker's wit, sharpnes and sarcastic ways of expressing feelings in words makes her one of the best writers of this century. She goes easily from the darknes of the feelings poignantly described in "Symptom Recital" to the lightness of "The Dance". She has left us with a treasuret to be cherished forever, her books are always at the forefront of my book shelves. I very highly recomend her to anybody that is considering buyin her works.
