Product Description

Product Description

The Porsche marque is synonymous with Le Mans, having competed in every single running of the 24-hour race since 1951. The streamlined 356 model entered in 1951 ran like clockwork to 20th place, beating the coveted record for the shortest time spent in the pits. Since that memorable debut, Porsche has won outright at Le Mans 16 times, with a record series of seven consecutive victories from 1981 to 1987. This beautifully designed and extensively illustrated book provides the definitive history of Porsche's participation at La Sarthe, chronicling the exploits of both the works team cars and privateer entries.

Good Picturebook 12 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
One of the new type of glossy-page motorsport picturebooks that seem to be appearing in quick succession of late. Great photos throughout, not that much text (and though I haven't read the whole thing yet, with a few sloppy errors - for example, one of the very first picture captions, on the Introduction page, says that Porsche won Le Mans with the 908/80 in 1980 - plain wrong!) Coverage of the older cars - 917, 935, 956 etc, is great, but for me there were too many of the later ones from roughly the turn of the century onwards - GT3s mostly, sometimes several pics of the same car on the same page - which kind of clashes with the earlier chapters where individual cars are lucky to get a pic apiece (though I appreciate that LM nowadays is smothered with photographers in a way it never was in earlier times when photo film was expensive). Nevertheless, a great book for Porsche afficionados (still, Bill Ousler's are better) with loads of good content, including results tables showing all the Porsches (but none of the other runners) ever to compete at La Sarthe. Porsche nuts will get it anyway, but can I recommend it to a more general motorsport enthusiast? Hmm, maybe, maybe not... Yes, just about.

Early Errors Put The Facts In Question. 19 May 2011
By Amazonian - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I relished the chance to learn the history of Porsche at Le Mans. This looked like just the book to serve that purpose. However it's accuracy came into immediate question in the foreword. In it, Reinhold Joest relates his 1980 effort with Jacky Ickx in which he finished second in a 936/80. However on the very next page is a picture of Joest with the caption " Reinhold Joest and Jacky Ickx won the 1980 Le Mans race convincingly in their Porsche 908/80. So, on the first page they misidentify the car and on the second page they state that they WON the 1980 Le Mans.

In racing terms this book stumbles at the start. How can I trust the thousands of subsequent facts and figures??

Sorry, only three stars from me.
