5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading! 3 Sep 2008
By Martin
For anyone with an interest in Porsche cars, or sports/performance cars in general, I would rate this book as being essential reading.

Written by Tony Dron, a successful racing driver, motoring journalist & author who quite plainly has a deep respect and affection for Porsche cars, it provides an historic insight into the technical development and driving dynamics of Porsche cars all the way from `No.1', up to the current range. He has driven, road tested and raced most of them for the best part of 40 years, and in this book he shares his experiences and opinions with the reader.

I've just finished reading my copy, and I'm about to go back to the beginning for a re-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Purely Personal Porsche 6 Jun 2010
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
OK - I admit it!! I am a Porsche aficionado!! I have owned them, 911, 924 turbo, 968 and Boxster. I have worked for a specialist Porsche dealer where we had over 500 regular customers so I drove and regularly saw most models. I have even driven a 959, an amazing car.

Tony Dron brings a wealth of knowledge to his writing and, something that these days PC - political correctness, fails to understand, personal opinions! Yes, he comments on things from his personal view. Yes some people will find this aspect of his writing difficult to accept. For me and I suspect the majority of people, it is these personal views and experiences that bring the book and subjects alive. I learnt so much from reading each page and alongside my personal views of the cars, now feel I have a greater understanding and experience of what makes Porsche one of the, if not the most, iconic of cars.

I strongly recommend this book as a worthy and essential member of a personal library!

My husband who owns a 911 could not put this book down so I would guess it is a good read for Porsche owners.

Tony Dron writes a thoughtful book about the Porsche range from the fifties virtually up to the modern day.
It is full of personal information in relation to the different models he has driven, raced and sold whilst working for Porsche, as well as descriptions of each Porshe model over the years with some very fascinating insights.
It makes a very good read, however it is not and is not meant to be a model by model detailed guide.
My only complaint is that every so often he is a little to personel and rather cruel about the very people who buy/bought Porsche.
For example at one point he states people were posers because they bought a wide (Turbo) bodied 911 without the Turbo engine. IE the SSE. Why? He had already stated that the early air cooled Turbo was not a good car for the road because of its temprement at the limit, yet your a poser if you bought the better braked, better handling Turbo bodied car but without the Turbo engine!!!
Another example 'I wanted to scream idiot' he states. All because a guy bought an SC 911 and had the optional wider wheels but without the spoiler package. Well to me some people will never drive cars anywhere near the cars limit or may not even know these extra driver aides help, but buy cars purely because they like the look of them, something Dron seems to have failed to understand when at a time he was selling them for a living.
This and a few other little digs let it down for me. It just gets a touch too personal at times.
