5.0 out of 5 stars A great buy for any 993 owner 10 Dec 2013
By Chris Andropoulos - Published on Amazon.com
I just had the opportunity to review the Bentley 993 manual and I was very impressed overall. I am a Porsche technician by trade and I have access to the complete (and expensive) factory manual set, but I have often found that a single comprehensive manual such as this is easier to grab and locate necessary info. The color photographs are very helpful when compared to the black and white drawings of the factory manuals (especially for a novice), and the quality hard-bound format allows the book to be able to lay flat on the workbench and stay open for one-handed page turning while working, which is very convenient. The factory wiring diagrams were very well integrated, with wiring tracks coded with letters to allow for easy tracing of an individual wire from one page to another.

There are a couple of errors, most notably how to check the oil level, but I would be willing to bet that most of the target audience of this book knows to proper method anyway.

This is a great buy for any 993 owner, and not a bad purchase for a professional shop looking for a good source of info on the 993 all in one book.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, a comprehensive alternative to "bootlegged" internet service and maintenance data for the Type 993 Porsche 911 cars 18 Nov 2013
By Me.............. - Published on Amazon.com
I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with the new Bentley Publishers Porsche 911 (Type 993) Carrera Service Manual for “last of the air-cooled” 1995-1998 cars. As a shop owner, I know how expensive and difficult it can be to assemble and use meaningful technical resources to work on or properly maintain these cars. The original Porsche manuals (now out of print) literally cost more than a thousand dollars when you could obtain legitimate copies; and most of the “bootleg” versions I have looked at on the internet are incomplete, often missing entire sections as well as any of the supplements and corrections that Porsche once issued to the set owners, not to mention the intellectual property issues associated with these questionable versions.

The 6 lb. Bentley 993 manual is a well-organized and easily searchable hard bound volume that is extensively illustrated with many photos, most in color, as well as diagrams where appropriate. It contains sections covering just about any service item, including multiple sections covering engine disassembly and re assembly, something that is sorely missing from even the later factory manuals for the 986/996 water cooled cars. It carries a full set of factory wiring diagrams, as well as over 60 pages on individual OBD II fault codes and their explanations.

Is it perfect? No. As with all Porsche related service manuals, it assumes that the user has a modicum of both technical and mechanical skills, plus access to a good tool set that includes some of Porsche specialty tooling. The OBD section, while very comprehensive, lacks the decision tree layout of the factory manuals that provide even a novice with a “do this first, then this, then that” approach to diagnostics. But the OBD section is logically organized enough to help find the cause for the codes. There is one minor typo correction noted at review time (concerning how to check the oil level), but as with all Bentley manuals, each copy has an individual code number inside the back cover that allows the owner to register it online so that they will receive future updates as these are found and identified, and this error already has been corrected. This is something you would not be getting with bootlegged information.

At less than $150, it is an excellent addition to the technical library of any shop or car owner that will be working on these models.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book to have if you do the maintenance on your car. 4 Dec 2013
By Dennis Garrood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The wiring diagrams and illustrative photos are worth a lot of the price for me. There are some errors or discrepancies with other similar publications that I have found in the short time that I have used the book. It should include the Turbo model for the price. Good book to have with the Adrian Streather (spelling?) book. Lots of overlap between the books; but enough difference to justify both.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all 993 Owners 2 Dec 2013
By Aaron R Murphy - Published on Amazon.com
As a Porsche repair shop we have access to all the factory service manuals, but the Techs always grab these books first. Another outstanding job from the folks at Bentley Publishers. This hardcover book is loaded with color photos that you won't find in any factory manuals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now you don't have to be scared about working on your own 993! 5 Dec 2013
By Paula C Irving - Published on Amazon.com
Admittedly, I'm not that mechanically inclined. I love my 993, but the idea of trying to service it myself has always scared me away. Now, after getting a copy of Bentley's newest service manual, I'm feeling more confident to try things on my own. The pictures and details provide so much detail, it's like you have someone with you showing you what to do. While I don't think I'll be tackling any big projects just yet (although with this book it seems you could), there are a number of smaller DIY projects I've wanted to do for a while that I feel comfortable taking on. Things like installing HID headlights, and changing out a broken driving light don't seem as daunting. I even plan to trouble shoot an issue with my passenger side window switch now that I know how to get at it. Better yet, I'm enjoying exploring my Porsche and love learning new things. For true DIY 993 owners I can only assume this book will become their new Bible. For me it's given me the confidence to do things I normally would have paid a shop to do. Dollar for dollar, it's probably the best money I've spent since the actual purchase of my 993.
