The 1975 and 1976 Christmas specials of the sitcom starring Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale, set in Slade prison. In the 1975 special, 'No Way Out', Harry Grout (Peter Vaughan) tries to enlist the help of Fletcher (Barker) in an escape attempt, while Mr Mackay (Fulton Mackay) has cancelled Christmas. In the 1976 special, 'The Desperate Hours', Fletcher and Godber are looking forward to sampling their illicit cell-brew liquor 'Chateau Slade', which they've been secretly brewing for months. Unfortunately, though, the spirit of Christmas seems to have passed Mr Mackay by, and when he discovers the moonshine brew, things get complicated...

Many comedies fall down on the Christmas special, when an extention to the normal running time highlights flaws in the scripts, or takes the characters out of their normal zone with disastrous results. This is not the case with this DVD. No Way Out has Fletcher trying to swing a stint in the prison hospital, but Harry Grout has friends on the outside who need a favour. The Desperate Hours has Fletcher and Godber looking forward to a Christmas drink. Things are bound to go wrong when Reg Unwin has visions of Christmas outside. Classic comedy.

Superb value. Both Porridge Christmas Specials plus the episode of the BBC Britain's Best Sitcom on Porridge in full (about 1 hour). This is a must for fans of good old Fletch and co.
Worth the money for the Britain's Best Sitcom programme alone. It's great to see cast members reminisce and see them as they are now, for example Sam Kelly (Bunny Warren) and Tony Osoba (McClaren.) The programme is presented by Johnny Vaughan - please don't let that put you off!
As for episodes themselves - pure golden Porridge.
Mr Mackay orders you to by it!

I love Ronnie Barker, I think the man is a comedy genius. I will sit down and watch anything with him in it. I had all the Porridge DVDs and was very, very happy when this became available. Good to hear that the Two Ronnies will back on our screens this year too as it should gain a new audience of younger viewers like me!

From the golden age of British TV Christmas comedies (1970's), the best of all of them in my opinion was set in the unlikely comedy confines of a prison known as Slade. The writings of Clement & Le Frenais coupled with the acting talents and schemes of Ronnie Barker as Fletch, Richard Beckinsale as Godber and Peter Vaughan as 'genial' Harry Grout; with the hapless Fulton MacKay and Brian Wilde as the warders, makes this dvd an essential watch over the holidays. You may have noticed that unfortunately, none of the aforestated actors are any longer with us. You may also recognize a young Christopher Biggins as the conductor of the prison choir who plays the character 'Lukewarm', and mugs Brian Wildes' Mr Barrowclough in the first episode on the dvd.

The much cliched word 'classic' is often attached to tv from a bygone era when it doesn't really warrant the elevation. Not in this case - TV comedy doesn't come any better than Porridge, well, maybe with the exception of Hancocks Half Hour.

Watching these episodes evokes warm memories of my childhood when they would be played on a Christmas Eve around 8.30pm, knowing that bedtime was near and I would be looking forward to the next day full of lovely food and presents.

I was pleased to buy this brand new and sealed dvd from a seller on Amazon for £1.92 which included the delivery cost. It's probably the best bargain I have made on the site 'pound for pound' as the saying goes.

This DVD contains two classic Christmas episodes, extended to 40 minutes each, so you aren't getting a full series.

However, if you are one to own the whole set, then you will not be disappointed with these.

One episode is the one where Fletch is trying to blag Christmas in the sick bay, and the other is the day Fletch and Godber get stuck in a hostage situation in the Governor's office.

Full of classic lines, wonderful expression, and more comedy on one DVD than most modern comedies manage in a whole series.

It is great to see the old British comedies that do not use foul language or scenes of nudity or sexual references to get a laugh. This film brings these favourite characters to life again.thank to all at Amazon, you keep these comedies alive and always available for those of us who like the finer things in life.
