Very stupid book 11 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
After reading the other reviews here, I was extremely disappointed in this book. It does not live up to the hype.

This book is not an "inside look" into the lives of porn stars. Just the opposite. It is nothing more than a collection of the author's impressions, mostly first impressions, of the porn industry, and lacks any real insight.

Gittler actually got to know very few porn stars and most of these people he never really interviewed. In fact, he recounts only one in-depth conversation with only one porn star (Jon Dough). By his own admission, he never got close to anyone in the porn industry and severed all ties as soon as his book was completed. He basically told one actress never to call him again.

One gets the impression that he spent less total time with his subjects than the average Playboy interviewer spends for one article. This lack of depth even led me to question not only whether the stars upon whom he builds the book (e.g., Debi Diamond) shared any real angst with him, but if they were even being honest. Once you question the sincerity of the stars' quotes the entire premise of the book falls apart.

I saw an interview with Mr Gittler in the Independent newspaper and bought the book via Amazon before Christmas. The book's text provides an insight more into Mr Gittler than his subject, the actors and actresses in the adult movie industry. He seems to have a fixation that all the performers in the films suffered sexual abuse as children. As a result their participation in the films is easily explained. I could easily quibble with this argument. However it does show the performers as ordinary people which is to be applauded. Despite the fact that some do odd things cf Savannah's speeding and Debi Diamond and the scratches on her car roof. The tone of the book is of sorrow and sympathy for his subjects. And the photographs ? All in black and white. Some excellent. Most very good. I did not like a couple of the photoes but that's personal taste. Putting names to faces as some may be seen elsewhere but not named was very helpful. My only other quibble would be with people either not shown or mentioned in the book. Granted John Holmes was dead when Mr Gittler started his project but; John Leslie mentioned but not shown in a photo Sharon Kane who has made over 600 films neither mentioned or shown. No mention or photoes either of Amber Lynn or Christy Canyon.

A coffee-table book 29 Feb 2000
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Gittler initially proposed to write a coffee-table book on porn-stars. And this he has achieved - in that the writing is weak and superficial while the photos are mainly of high quality, if some of them are of questionable taste.
