Porlex is a Japanese company that specializes in food grinders. This grinder is very well made with a well thought out design. This is one of the most compact, useful grinders on the market. The handle comes off and you are able to store it alongside of your grinder when you are not using it. The grinders inner spring helps keep the grind consistent even when grinder for coarse brewing. The stainless steel body makes the grinder indestructible and static free. The ceramic, conical burrs are easy to clean, will last long, and will remain rust-free.
What Other Items Do Customers Buy After Viewing This Item?
Been using it since the day it arrived, a couple of times a day, and it really is built like a tank. It's all stainless steel, grinds quite evenly, and spare parts are easy to buy. Very recommended.
Edit: After about six months of daily use, it is still as good as the day it arrived. The only maintenance I do is cleaning it once a week, by removing all the ceramic parts, scrubbing them in a bit of warm water and soap (be careful not to drop anything - the ceramic burrs may shatter) and letting them dry. Perfect companion for my Aeropress (Aerobie AeroPress Coffee Maker).
Edit 2: I have now been using it daily for 19 months, and it is still going strong. The burr is getting a bit worn (much less than I expected it to be by now though), but still working perfectly. All the other parts are as good as the day the arrived. Truly impressive!

Really beautifully crafted product and lovely to use. Instructions came in Japanese (as it's a Japanese product) but a quick google gave me instructions in English and didn't really contribute anything to what I couldn't work out on my own. Grinds very easily and consistently. Produces a beautiful grind and gives real pleasure to use. Handle is quick to remove and it's an ideal size for sticking in your suitcase when travelling. One tiny criticism is my wife likes Turkish coffee, which requires a very, very, very fine powder which I can't seem to achieve with this grinder. Not the primary reason for purchase, just an observation if this is something you wanted for yourself.
Otherwise, delighted with it. Came highly recommended on many coffee blogs, such as [...] and I can see why. Excellent product!

So, I needed a new coffee grinder. The 'classical' one I'd bought years ago was more for show than practicality. It was being used less and less because of the time it took to grind just enough for 1 cup. Enjoying one during the day required setting aside at least 30 minutes and the long preparation time reduced the pleasure. Time to look for an electric one.
I was aware that the aficionados stated an aggressive grinder would put too much heat into the grounds and spoil the flavour, although I hadn't confirmed this for myself. With this in mind, I started searching. I read a few reviews, drew up a short list, and nipped onto Amazon to buy one.
That's as far as I got. How much??? Now don't get me wrong, I do believe in the adage you get what you pay for, but hundreds of pounds for something that is used for a few seconds three of four times a week did not make economic sense for me, no matter how good the coffee. Back to the drawing board.
I removed the word 'electric' from my search and started again. All the usual suspects popped up, very similar to my existing model, then, the Porlex popped into view. The many positive reviews were a very good sign, though I always read the negative reviews just to check for potential recurring faults. The few 1 or 2 stars this one had, were easily dismissed and so the order was duly placed.
That was a few weeks ago and I have to say, those positive reviews were right. Grinding coffee now takes a mere 5 minutes from bean to cup. I can't see how a manual grinder can be any faster. I find the effort involved to be minimal. To those of you who think it's hard, please try the manual grinder I used to use. The brew (to my admittedly non-expert palate) tastes consistently wonderful.Read more ›

I was looking for a portable hand grinder to accompany my Aeropress, and the Porlex Tall Hand Grinder has exceeded my expectations in all respects.
The industrial design is attractive, the engineering of the internal mechanism is simple and reliable, the materials and workmanship are very high, the process of hand grinding is easier than expected (due to the good leverage created between the end of the handle and the center of the ceramic mill, and the grind adjustment allows me to get the perfect grind for the Aeropress.
With the handle removed, the mill will fit neatly inside the plunger of the Aeropress (protruding slightly), which is convenient for packing or travel.
Other reviews have noted the lack of English instructions. This is true, but the mill is fairly self-explanatory. Beans in the top, adjust grind with the screw on the bottom, grind, and empty grounds. Loosen the grind screw completely, and the mechanism completely disassembles into a few simple parts for cleaning.
I have not had any issue with the handle coming off the top whilst grinding. Although there is no means to secure it, the nut the handle sits on is long enough that simply pushing the handle down all the way before grinding is enough.

I checked out this grinder after my disappointing experience with the Hario small grinder - reviewed here... The Hario had very good reviews - but mine was a bummer, with a worn-out spindle after only two months, and Amazon took it back for a refund. I ordered this Porlex on the rebound, and this is written only days after receiving it. Unlike the Hario - a Japanese brand - this is actually manufactured in Japan, and my Amazon order was shipped from Japan too. It came fairly quickly, good service. Initial impressions: I like the stainless steel body, more encouraging than the Hario's lightweight plastic, and no static electricity; the parts slide together easily; grind adjustment is very easy; the handle is long and gives good leverage; it's comfortable to hold & operate, easier to grip than the Hario; and it grinds very well. So far, no sign at all of the handle binding itself onto the drive shaft, or scoring the shaft - unlike the Hario... So far this seems like a good grinder, which cost twice as much as the Hario, though the RRP of the latter is actually the same as the £30+ I paid for this Porlex. I shall update this review after a few weeks' use. Mid-July: still impressed with the Porlex. Unlike my bad experience with the Hario, this grinder shows absolutely no sign of wear & tear, and is a delight to use. Did I mention that I like its slender, compact shape - which is nevertheless easy to grip? I might buy another one for use with spices...
