Product Description

Originally a 1935 opera written by George Gershwin, Porgy And Bess was made into a film in 1959 with Sidney Poitier playing Porgy and Dorothy Dandridge as Bess. These are not the voices you will hear on this album, however, for Robert McFerrin dubbed the singing voice of Sidney and Adele Addison did the same for Dorothy. Other actors in the film were also dubbed, including Diahann Carroll, although not surprisingly Sammy Davis Jr does his own singing!

This CD isn't very good - in fact it sounds as if it were recorded off of an LP complete with skips and pops. There was a German pressed CD from the early 90's that sounds much better - I'll stick with that one. You can find it on ebay. That is the CD that should have been re-released

I can't comment on the sound quality of this particular CD but can write about the actual performances on this CD and explain why it should be looked out.

My parents had this recording on LP since the early 1960s and I have it now.

To give a bit of background; this is the soundtrack to the movie starring Dorothy Dandridge,Sydney Poitier, Sammy Davis Junior and Pearl Bailey. The filming was fraught with difficulties. Its subject matter made it difficult to cast; many African American actors did not want to be associated with it. There was also a serious fire during filming which caused the set to be detroyed at one point. Furthermore, the Gershwin Estate were not happy with the final product and I understand that it is hard to get to see it in any format. Until I found this LP in my parents' record collection, I was not even aware that Porgy and Bess had been filmed.

My comments are based on the recording not the movie. The Gershwin Estate was not happy with the recording because they considered that it was too jazzy and not "classical" enough. I can understand this criticism. The wonderful Simon Rattle recording has a "Puccinian" level of intensity at times and shows that this work is worthy to be regarded as a serious opera rather than as music theatre.

However, I still love this recording and come back to it more often than to Simon Rattle's rendition. The soundtrack is conducted by none other than Andre Previn at the time he was employed as a Hollywood composer, conductor and arranger. I have none of the Gershwin Estate's misgivings about the sounds created - Previn creates a wonderful orchestral sound with plenty of colour and musical intensity. However, the aspect of the recording that appeals most is the singing of the Porgy.

I would have to agree with the previous reviewer regarding this recording and the pops and cracks that can be heard. However I suppose that if you buy cheap you get cheap. One further point is that in the info provided by Amazon they are not entirely correct. Yes voices were dubbed, but the inference is that it is Sammy Davis Jr who is heard on the soundtrack. In the film maybe, but on the recording it is Cab Calloway. I suspect that this had something to do with contractual obligations as Sammy at that time recorded I believe for Brunswick Records. I will certainly be looking on E-bay for the German issued CD.

CD was for my Mum and was what she wanted. It wasn't a remastered version so quality of sound not brilliant but it was what she asked for and was a good price

Fascinating to have the (partial) soundtrack of this hard-to-see movie, though the limitations of the sound quality are a frustration, as is the absence of Sammy Davis Jr. Those who know the original will find some of Previn's changes odd and/or wilful, but at the budget price the compensations of curiosity partially-filled are not negligible.
