About the Author

Jess is an English/Business senior at Adams State College. About Porcelain, she says, "I had a decade's worth of short stories, poems, and oddball sketches sitting around in various files and folders. I decided to showcase some of them in a novella. I previously read Jess C Scott's book 'Eyeleash: A blog Novel' and I absolutely loved that, so I was keen to read 'Porcelain'. I wasn't disappointed.
I was going to give it 4 stars because for me, the essays at the end of the book are a bit much. As I haven't read any of the books which the author has written about, I couldn't really get into the essays. But then I realised that for anyone who has read those books, Jess C Scott's essays would be interesting to read, so I can understand why she has included them in the book and I've upped my rating to 5 stars.
'Porcelain' is a wonderful collection of short stories, poems, sketches, essays and blogs. It is an insight into the world of this highly original author. I think Jess C Scott is one of the authors at the forefront of a new revolution in the publishing industry which is leading the way for writers to be able to publish their work easily online (self-publish/indie publishing) without the "middleman" as Jess C Scott puts it in one of her essays. As an indie author myself, I enjoyed reading her article about 'Indie Vs. traditional publishing'
I love the short stories, which are thought provoking and extremely well written. I like the way the author has included stories in 'Porcelain' that she wrote as a child, showing her 'evolution' as a writer.
'Porcelain' is a fun read, and a great showcase of Jess C Scott's talent as a writer. She has made this book available as a free download on her website and has included excerpts of her novels and up-coming work, which is a great idea as her audience can then get a preview of her books and decide whether or not they would want to read more. It's a great concept. It is clear from reading this book that this artist lives and breathes for her writing. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

Variety is a beautiful thing 7 July 2010
By LibraryThingLoaf - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Jess C. Scott is a prolific writer. She has collected "a decade's worth" of creative endeavors into this published portfolio. Some of the items are excepts from full-length novels and collections while others are academic papers and treaties on Scott's writing motivation and inspiration. Considering the rather short time she professes to have been creating works for publication, the volume of the work is impressive. Perhaps even more impressive is the quality of the work. Her writing posses a certain frankness, a sureness that comes across neither as over-confident or arrogant. It is simply that each word she writes is exactly what she wants to say and as a reader, it is very natural in terms of comprehension and flow. She experiments with a variety of genres and styles, but that honesty and sense of self flows through them all.

Her use of styles and formats such as blog entries,IMs, etc. is quite savvy. It makes sense that the acceptance of those formats in the internet world would allow it to spill over into an accepted form of prose. Scott handles it well and as she says in this book, she does it not to be gimmicky. She succeeds in this regard.

The rather frantic nature of this collection, while a great overview of Scott's writing, art, poetry, and personality could leave a casual reader overwhelmed. The excerpts are interesting and do encourage one to seek out further work by the author but if one were to pick this up casually, I could see how a reader might be overwhelmed or even frustrated with the quick change of tone, style, and the brevity of some of the excerpts.

All said and done, Jess C Scott is a young talent with good technique and a natural sense of writing. Her potential is immense and I wish her success.

A Unique Jouney 2 Sep 2010
By Dan Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Porcelain is an extensive collection of short stories, poems, sketches, and so much more from the multitalented artist Jess C. Scott. With Porcelain the reader can witness the "Evolution" of the writer from over a decades worth of work. It appears obvious that even at a young age, Jess C. Scott would deservingly demand attention in the literary world, and it is heartwarming to see that she has chased and realized the dream.

Highlights amongst the short stories are Savion, which came with the disclaimer that is was for animal lovers and being just that the disclaimer was dead on. This tale gives the reader an enjoyable trip into the psyche of the woodland critters as a hunter sets his scope. As a result I will forever declare that Savion is very deer to me.

Some of the poems seemed disjointed, but amongst them were some gems, including every work from the dragon section. Poem after poem inspired by the symbol of excellence resulting in a work of excellence. Dragons would be proud!

To top off her exceptional/unique writing style, Jess C. Scott also is talented in the ways of drawing; it appears there is nothing Jess can not do when it comes to the pen and paper combination. Such a diverse portfolio, yet each holding on to a distinct style that the artist has created for herself, and the ability to capture the grace of birds in a two dimensional black and white display is not an easy task. My only problem with this section was there was not enough; with only twenty drawings, it was over too soon.

After reading Porcelain I feel almost as if I have taken a trip into the mind of Jess C. Scott, which may not be a popular vacation destination, but it is truly one of the most beautiful sites to see. I feel like I was given a unique opportunity to get to know Jess through her artistic journey and I have a better understanding why she does what she does and it is simple; when you have a gift (or multiple gifts in this case), you need to share them with the world.

Porcelain
This is an intriguing book of small delicate items. It is very well set out in a different way to many other books. It has to be read carefully to realise its true character. Very interesting surprises. The descriptions of well known author's writings, is amazing.
Porcelain breaks into little pieces and comes back together again in your head.
