Product Description

Donna Soto-Morettini is one of the top performance coaches in the industry and has worked as casting director and performance coach for the hit BBC reality casting shows, I'd Do Anything, Any Dream Will Do, and How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria. She was the founding senior vocal coach at Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Based on her years of teaching experience in a multitude of styles, this unique book is a practical guide to exploring the singing voice and will help to enhance vocal confidence in a range of styles including Pop, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Country and Gospel. Both singers and voice teachers will benefit from the clear analysis of these styles and advice on how to improve performance. Popular Singing provides effective alternatives to traditional voice training methods and demonstrates how these methods can be used to create a flexible and unique sound. A free CD of voice demonstrations is also included.

I'm a guitarist. But in all my searching for a book or two that would help me through the basics of what you need to work on as a player and occasional singer, this book was the best. From my point of view, it explains everything you need to know about styles of singing, appropriateness of techniques, practice, voice and breath control - everything I wanted to know. And a CD to hear the examples and exercises. It's difficult to find books that don't either dumb it all down to X Factor, Fame Academy style or go to the other extreme - "If you not musical theatre and opera darling, you're a waster."

Check out a couple of other reviews at the USA Amazon site. Give this book a try if you're learning to sing at school or college, working up to gigging in a band (whatever style) or just want to sound better in the shower (if you have someone who hears you and complains - haha).

Can't point you to much else as I usually do with my reviews - didn't find anything else I much liked. Perhaps I'm too much a player than a singer? The Berklee singing book was one I had for a while, but I sold that and kept this book on the shelf.

I don't know why I am not giving this book 5 stars-IT IS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE READ ON THE VOICE. This book provides you with a foundation in vocal technique and encourages you to find different colours in your voice. The cd is excellent and very resourceful. It is not a vocal training-sing scales book, it is a resource book showing you elements of style found in the major genres of music. Get it and you will be amazed at the rainbow that lies in your vocal palette.

This book is so good that when I lost my copy, I'd another one ordered within a week! It's great.

There's no scales to waste your time on, it's simply about how to be creative with your voice and that's really what makes popular music interesting to listen to! The important concepts are clearly laid out. "Proper" singing isn't put forward as the only way to do it and dangerous voice qualities are acknowledged and explained.

There's fantastic analysis of the voice qualities used in tons of songs and suggested listening, which is great for generating ideas. As the book doesn't work on obvious big hits of recent years, it has introduced me to some amazing music that I may never have heard of, which sparks the imagination again!

Wasn't sure why she changed some of the Estill terms for the sounds, however the new names work and that's what counts.

Love it!
