Book Description

All the errors, popular assumptions, myths and plain lies explained away. As jolly as QI, as extensive as Schotts and as fun as Ripley.

Product Description

In 1841, John Timbs wrote a book called "Popular Errors Explained". It went on - with Timbs' other great series "Curiosities of ..." - to become one of the great popular books of the 19th century, running into many editions and selling hundreds of thousands of copies. Some say the popularity of his one hundred and fifty volumes led him to outsell a certain Mr Dickens. Stewart McCartney, under the Timbs title of "Popular Errors Explained" has created a new book, capturing the zeal and enthusiasm of the original, to be 'agreeable, by way of abstract and anecdote so as to become an advantageous and amusing guest at any intellectual fireside.' The book has completely new material - around 200 or so 'popular errors' from science and literature, history, sport, popular culture and so on. Each entry will have that eyebrow raising 'I didn't know that!' or 'Surely that cannot be true!' feel. Every one will explode a commonly held misbelief.

Stop looking at socks, hankies and nose-hair trimmers right now; this joy of a book will solve all your Christmas present dilemmas. It's great value for money as it consists of over 360 pages of wisdom, wit and humour. The content is a series of brief little essays on everything from why bats don't have radar to why Czech is actually Polish, why Stilton cannot be made in Stilton itself and hundreds of other gems. For once the publishers'cover design really does indicate the breadth of content in the book. First class.

It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't contain quite so many factual errors itself. Apparently a town called "Meridan" thinks itself the centre of England, but chortle, it's incorrect! The real centre of England is 22 miles away. Except of course the town of "Meridan" doesn't exist - it is Meriden with an "e", not an "a". I am sure to find plenty more such errors. If you really are going to write a book debunking popular errors (many of which aren't even popular errors at all) then at least get your own facts straight.
