Amazon.co.uk Review

Popstars, the debut album from the five luckiest pop starlets in the UK, Hear'Say, was the end product of THE watercooler TV event of early 2001. The TV series took a winning formula, already tried and tested in America (O-Town) and Australia (Bardot) and turned it into a ratings winner, which proved to be compulsive viewing. The series spawned a record-breaking single and this album. As the show proved, not all manufactured pop bands are just pretty faces first and foremost and talented singers second. There is no doubting the youngsters' ability to belt out a good song, and there are plenty on offer here for them to flex their vocal chords over. This is pop at its purest--listen closely and you'll hear shades of All Saints ("Pure & Simple" and "Sweet Alibi"), Steps ("Make It Happen"), Destiny's Child ("One"), S Club 7 ("Not That Kind"), Five ("Breathe") and even Janet Jackson ("Another Lover"), with the overall effect of pleasing familiarity, but not to the stage where it begins to breed contempt. As debut albums go, it's remarkably confident and self-assured, especially when you consider that Myleene, Kym, Noel, Danny and Suzanne were all unknowns less than 3 months before the album appeared. Whether they will be able to maintain the momentum remains to be seen, but for the time being, just sit back and enjoy the fun.--Les McQueen

No one is as big a pop fan as me, so imagine my disapointment when I put this one on. Take away all the hype, and Pure and Simple is an above average pop song. The Way to your love is the only excellent song on the album, which you all no doubt know. What you may not know, is that no other song on this CD comes close in terms of quality with the first two tracks on the CD. It was produced in 6 months, and quite honestly it does show. In a market full of teen pop, you cant afford to release rubbish anymore. Unfortunately for Hear'Say there are only two great songs on this CD, and its a sound that other bands do better.

To put it simply, this album is one of, if not the best pop album i've ever heared!! Its a diverse album, with true pop songs (Pure and Simple and The Way To Your Love)some R and B influenced songs (One Step Closer and Another Lover) some wicked group songs, that make you wanna dance (Not The Kind and Colour Blind) and some ballads (the lovely Carried Away and the beautiful cover version of Bridge Over Troubled Water). The album showcases the groups fabulous, strong voices, and its nice to hear a group that dont need synthasisers to sound good!! Hear'say are brilliant singers, and this album proves that each and every one of them have gorgeous voices! There is only one bad song on this album ,and thats the song 'One'. Its got cheesy lyrics, and compared to the rest of the album its a weak song. But overall this album is briliant and i'd recommend it to anyone! I also really like the cover 'Monday Monday', its a really happy song, and it puts a smile on my face every time!! This album is an album that will suit wahtever mood your in, basically it's an album that will be on my fave list for a long time!! Get it now!!

Given the massive hype and tv link-in, this CD was always guaranteed to sell by the barrow load. Hear'Say's great debut single "Pure & Simple" is here, but aside from the Cheiron-lite track "Show me the way to your Love" (the likely follow-up single), there isn't a lot else to hold your attention.

The credentials of the writers are good - the in-vogue Stargate team along with Elliot Kennedy's Steelworks and other pop regulars, but the tracks here sound like "just good B-sides" and fall a little flat - maybe as a result of the tight timeframe demanded by the tv show link.

As a comparison, I bought Girl Thing's CD from Asia recently (they originally recorded Pure & Simple). They have many of the same writers as Hear'Say (Stargate/Steelworks, etc) but I'd have to say, despite their lack of success in the UK, Girl Thing definitely got the better end of the deal in terms of songs... their debut release is a great happy, catchy pop album - which is what I guess Hear'Say were hoping for as well.

Unfortunately they didn't get it. That's not to say the gang haven't got talent - they've certainly got the voices - and a few moves as well (Noel's dodgy knee aside ;-)

It's a shame that Pete Waterman didn't work with them seeing as there's no sign of "the other 5" who were initially in talks with the hitmaker... Given the quality of pop tracks coming from Waterman's current production teams in recent years (Steps, Tina Cousins, Ellie Campbell) it could have given this album a much needed melodic boost!

Here's hoping Hear'Say don't turn serious on us, and manage to stay together long enought to turn out a better pop album on their second attempt!
