Product Description

Product Description

A stirring novel of love and remembrance, set around the time of the first world war.

Book Description

Jessica Hart's beloved mother has died in childbirth and her stepmother and father are forcing her to marry the dull local blacksmith. She runs away from her country home to Birmingham, arriving late one night on the doorstep of her poverty-stricken aunt's tiny terraced house, already home to her four cousins. Ned, a family friend, comes calling one day and he and Jessica fall for each other immediately. But Ned is married and his young wife is expecting a baby... Annie Murray's uplifting saga set during the Great War is a moving story of love, remembrance and ultimately of healing. 'Full of warmth and domestic detail which inspires the reader. Annie Murray brings her characters vividly to life.' Denise Robertson

Poppy Day by Anne Murray

If you persevere with the story line you will enjoy it. Jess has left home because she is unhappy with her father and his new wife, and they are marrying her off to someone that she dislikes. She goes to live with her Mother's sister who has secrets of her own which come to the surface when Jess goes back in to her life.

However, she takes her in and Jess settles down with the rest of the family who are Sis, the youngest, Polly, Bert and baby Ronnie and gets a job. Things go well until she falls in love with a family friend who is already married and whose wife is expecting their first child. They meet secretly but things come to a head when he tells his wife he is leaving her. Auntie Olive puts Jess out and she finds rooms with an elderly lady but she is expecting Ned's child. Ned who has a daughter of his own now agrees to divorce his wife Mary eventually. His family is against Jess and when she looses the baby it takes the urgency away and life rolls on.

War is declared and Ned goes off to fight but spends his leave with Jess. Eventually, he is wounded and goes to convalesce at his own home. His family are against Jess and won't let her see him..It is quite an interesting book and has several incidents not all have been mentioned which slowly unfold throughout.

Like all the othe books I have read by Annie Murray this was a thoroughly good read and the pace of the story was kept up right to the end. Just when you think you know what the next part is going to be it changes and keeps you wanting to to read to the end. Every part of the books I have read so far by Annie Murray are exciting and not one part has a boring bit, the only sad part is when you come to the end of the book!

The historical content about Birmingham is also quite accurate as my late mother was born and lived in Birmingham at the time this book was written and told me a lot about the times and Birmingham then.

I have enjoyed all the Annie Murray books that I have read so far, particularly as they are set in Birmingham, and I have been tracing my ancestors from that city. This book apart from being up to Annie's usual standard of brilliant story telling was set in the exact district where my father was brought up, so I found the story really touching as I discovered I had lost a great uncle during the First World War. I thought the way Annie dealt with this aspect of the story - especially the end section was very poignant. Don't want to give too much away to anyone who has not read it! Highly recommended.
