Definitive History of Offshore Pirate Radio,
By White Cliffs (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pop Went the Pirates: Bk. 2: Definitive History of Offshore Radio (Hardcover)
This excellent and comprehensive book is strongly recommended for all who remember that 'Golden Age' of free radio when the ships and forts gave us, the people of the UK, the opportunity to hear the music we wanted to hear when we wanted to hear it.
It covers all the famous stations and gives insights into both the lives of those who ran and worked on them and technical details of how the station operated. The book covers the events and even includes the text of the infamous Act of Parliament that silenced the stations. It also has information about life after the Act was passed and how Caroline carried on and others came and went. For all who want to know the fascinating history of how the government was forced to allow commercial radio and provide the audiences in Britian with the entertainment it had been denied, this is the book to buy. If you don't remember the excitement of those early pioneers, then this is still a book to read. It will tell you how today's broadcasters owe so much to those who fought the 'Establishment' to get the freedom we now take for granted. The lesson of the fight for freedom is always one to be savored. It is difficult to see how a better example could be found in our recent history.

The Pirate Radio Bible,
This review is from: Pop Went the Pirates: Bk. 2: Definitive History of Offshore Radio (Hardcover)
This has to be The Definitive History of Offshore or Pirate Radio.
I grew up in the era of Radio Caroline, Radio London, Radio 270 et al in the "Swinging Sixties", and I have found this book, which is an update of Keith Skues's original edition from 1994, to be even more informative, particularly with the information as to the regular Pirate Radio Reunions and seeing pictures of the "jocks" as they are today. Reading this book takes one back to those Glory Days and the amount of detail is incredible and a credit to the author. The only other publication that compliments this book is the rare Paul Harris book, "When Pirates Ruled The Waves" (Impulse Publications 1968)of which I have an autographed copy of the first edition and a subsequent copy of a later reprint. Anyone who saw the movie "The Boat That Rocked" (Universal DVD)should watch the movie again having read the aforementioned books to get a true picture of Pirate Radio life.

Pop Went the Pirates,
This review is from: Pop Went the Pirates: Bk. 2: Definitive History of Offshore Radio (Hardcover)
This is THE book for everyone who has an interest in how British music radio evolved from the 1960's when previously the Beeb had just an hour and a half dedicated to pop music each week late on Saturday night, half current hits and half new releases. Keith Skues has truly produced the definitive superbly researched illustrated history of offshore radio.
