A friend put me on to this by way of thanking me for getting him into far too much music to mention. France's best known exports are slightly more weighty than this but whilst Yelle comes from a slightly frothier end of the electropop market that is, in this case, no bad thing at all.

Musically this is tightly sequenced solid electro but it maintans a light touch throughout the album's duration. The music avoids any dark shades and veers towards bright melodies and sticks itself firmly in pop music territory. In a day when that's seen as something of a slur this is without question the sort of music pop should be aiming to be. The fact that it's sung in French doesn't detract from the pleasures of "Pop-Up" and says a lot for the strength of the melodies and songwriting in general here.

The sequence of the album works well and doesn't throw all its best shots out right at the start. Opener "Ce Jeu" is an obvious choice for a single at some point although it's "A Cause Des Garcons" which posesses the finest melody. Anyone with any sense should hire a translator and ship this across to Xenomania for Girls Alound as it sounds like their kind of song. Elsewhere the melodies and vocals hint at various other pop highlights of the moment. "Mal Poli" and "Je Veux Te Voir" sound like an electro Ting-Tings with hint of that shouty pop about them. The rest of the tracks provide some neat hooks to hang their wares upon.

The overall impression this album leaves is good. This isn't deep or emotional, it's pop music. If this album were food it would be a cheese souffle - light, fluffy, with a nice tangy kick to it - not substantial but very satisfying all the same.

old school 80s pop with a modern twist 15 Feb. 2008

This album is great. If you speak French and can understand the lyrics, you will love it. The lyrics are very funny and witty. It mostly talks about Yelle and her relationships and experiences with men... The music is purposely 80s and Yelle "talks" more than she sings. "A cause des garcons" was a very popular 80s song in France and the remix on this album is great. You can also buy separately the "a cause des garcons" Tepr remix, it is even better. Check also the video on youtube: the video even has Tektonik dancers in it, a very popular dance right now in France.

C'est parfait! 26 Mar. 2008

After having been BOMBARDED with these cute little commercials on MTV this past weekend promoting her album, I decided to check it out. I love it!!

I have NO idea what the chick is talking and singing about because I don't speak French, but the music is so melodic and addictive that you won't be able to stop listening to the album. Some tracks are very synth-pop, others are disco throwbacks, others will remind you a little of R&B/jazz hybrids, but all are highly enjoyable.

It's also a great gift for young Francophiles. Check her out!

Oui, oui! 28 Mar. 2008

I too checked out Yelle after seeing her 'unique' video style in commercials on a particular cable station and I too have NO IDEA what she is saying what-so-ever but I have to agree with nauti, her music style and the way she sings is just really catchy and fun. It is reminiscent of the 80's when music was about FUN and not about whining, emo issues and drama. It's worth a listen.
I love this, therefore I am an idiot? 25 May 2014

Really 4 1/2 stars, for pure uplifting joy. This is most purely upbeat music since the Strauss Waltzes, though perhaps a trifle more forgettable. Call it, not the Perils of Pauline, but the Perils of Pandora. I gave a track from Yelle thumbs up, heard more and more, and bought this. You know how people write "it hasn't left my CD player (or substitute other hardware) since"? Same with me, with this disk. Some are writing "if you know French, the lyrics are really clever." I know just enough to catch the refrains, and what's perhaps most interesting is that the French language is a good “mate” for electro-pop, which I understand this to be. The heavier beats of true rock gave us the awkwardness of "ye-ye," but the fluid rhythms of French marry well with the flexibility and light beats of electro-pop. Enjoy this.

Pop-Up 30 Mar. 2008

The first song I heard was Je Veux Te Voir and I instantly got hooked. I had no idea how dirty the lyrics were until I read some reviews about the song and got my sister to translate some parts for me. It is pretty hilarious though. All the songs on this album are pretty cool, it is the kinda album you can listen throughout. The key tracks would be:

-Ce Jeu
-A Cause De Garcon (A remake)
-Tu Es Beau
-Je Veux Te Voir
-Amour Du Sol

Yelle makes what I'd call FUN music.
Very nice.
