Book Description

28 May 2009

She was America's sweetheart. Until the love affair ended with a bang…

Young make-up artist Jackie Reilly has always dreamed of making it big in TinselTown, concealing the flaws of the rich and famous. Stuck in a rut with a crazy boss, she thinks her big break will never come - until she meets a girl who guarantees her life will never be the same again…

16-year-old Brooke Parker is bubbly, vivacious, charming - and about to become the world's most famous teenager. A pop singer on the verge of superstardom, Brooke instantly takes a shine to Jackie and draws her into a world of white-stretch limos, screaming fans and invitations to VIP events.

But as Jackie quickly finds out, fame has its dark side. Forced to juggle the various egos of Brooke's entourage - from bitchy stylists to over-eager publicists and a manager that serves his own interests before all else - all preserving the golden girl image of brand Brooke.

Caught in the tight grip of the P.R machine, Brooke starts to rebel, taking Jackie along for the ride. At first her bad girl antics are a blast, earning her even more column inches, but when her heavy partying brings Brooke's demons to the surface she begins to fall apart and soon, she is taking Jackie down with her.

When Jackie is forced to learn the rules of showbusiness the hard way, her friendship with Brooke is put to the ultimate test - will she be yet another casualty of Brooke's increasing quest for fame?
Or can she save herself - and Brooke?

4.0 out of 5 stars A quick read for Heat lovers! 17 Feb 2010
By J Cattermole VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
For those really into the celebrity world you will love this book, I chose this as it's different and not a style I'd go for generally and it is basically the life of a young girl being thrown into the media and the struggles etc and based on Britney which i discovered afterwards. I agree it is very much a teenage girls book who are into the lives of celebrities and even wish they were more like Jordan or Britney and this book that highlights the lows is a good lesson not to crave the stardom!

Not really for me, but i finished it in a weekend, quick easy read when you're looking for something light and not having to think too much about it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Might as well read a copy of a celebrity Mag!! 7 Sep 2009
By Ms. E. Blankson VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book basically seemed to be loosely based on Britney Spears her rise to fame as an American Sweetheart, falling in love with a Justin Timberlake character and her loosing it when it all gets a bit too much, except the Britney esk character is called Brooke and it is told through the eyes of the makeup artist/songwriter/actress// Jackie.

I can't fault the book on the way that it was written as it is written quite well but the content is shallow at the best of times. This insider view that Jackie has on Brooke may as well be an outsiders view as there is nothing shocking or any `wow I didn't know celebs do that' that she sees. Also the impact on `Jackie of all trades' is simply not that interesting to read as all the reactions are expected.

I couldn't help but feel that I could read a copy of a celebrity magazine and it would tell me exactly the same thing as all the pages of this book except in fewer pages and with pictures!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ooops!...I'm. In. The. Wrong. Age. Group! 29 Aug 2009
By Ms. Felicia Davis-burden VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The way I've typed the title-line illustrates one of the ways in which this novel disappointed me. I was hoping to be entertained, amused and shocked a little by this piece of fluffy chick-lit. Instead I found a deeply predictable, thinly disguised fictionalisation of Britney Spears's spiralling career.

The cult of celebrity is fascinating, if ultimately ridiculous; We know what to expect, but this novel (authored, incredibly, by two writers) quickly becomes tiresome in its relentless roundabout of who's-she-sleeping-with?, what's-she-on? and what-on-earth-does-she-look-like? I began to wish that either the star (Brooke) or her make-up artist (Jackie) would take an overdose or throw herself out of a hotel window with a vast quantity of alcopops in her system. When the inevitable breakdown finally occured I was yawning, not at all shocked and completely fed up with both of the witless women.

Through every chapter, I silently predicted their every Hollywood faux pas, but maybe it was because I'm a 40-something, not a teenaged or 20-something woman... The frequent use of: One. Word. Pieces. Of. Dialogue. By. Almost. Every. Character actually infuriated me. The authors do not pretend to be Shakespeare, but this really is not good writing.

'Pop Tart' is clearly perfect for a lazy afternoon on the beach; book in one hand, Blackberry in the other, Ipod sounds between the ears and mani-pedi gleaming. I read it in one afternoon and felt disappointed that I'd made the effort to prepare a cafetaire of coffee and moisturise my feet.

I'm sure that the 'Chick-Lit' market can produce the occasional gem of a book, but it's taking some effort to find one. There is an audience just right for 'Pop Tart'. Just make sure that you are in the suitable age-group!

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring, Boring 17 Jun 2014
By Ravena
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's an inside fictional story about a pop singer named Brooke. But it starts after she becomes famous not before when she was a normal innocent, naive girl wanting to be famous not realising that fame has a dark side. I was disappointed. I stopped reading it somewhere in the middle.

I wouldn't recommend this book. Spotlight by Ilana Fox is so much better.

2.0 out of 5 stars For What it is it's Probably Good 29 Jun 2012
By S. Vasicek VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
For what it is and who it's aimed at this book probably serves a purpose. Unfortunately none of that is relevant to me. In the past I've been too eager to simply dismiss this kind of thing without having actually explored the genre so I thought it would for me to form a more full opinion instead of hating it for simply existing.

I have to say that I didn't 'hate' it but nor did I get any real enjoyment out of it either. It very much resembles a glossy magazine and story seem identical, as others have said, to that of Britney Spears in real life. It's a bit 'trashy' but it's not going to harm anyone. I concluded with the opinion that I have no intention of reading this sort of thing again but I'm not angered by it existing and respect it has a purpose. If this is what you're in to then you will like it but unfortunately I'm not in to this.

The book is basically just about celebs and celeb stuff. I couldn't finish the book. It just dragged on and on. Wish I'd not got this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmmm 20 Feb 2011
By Angel
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Maybe i am wrong to write a review seeing as i couldnt finish this book (i gave up after 6 chapters). As a make up artist myself i thought id give it a read but found there were too many characters to keep up with who was doing what and where which was very confusing, i didnt find any suspense in it at all, just boring talk of a miley cyrus like character who lives on a tour bus and has a Jonas brothe type boyfriend. I dont usually stop reading books mid way but i just couldnt carry on with this. Also i think this is for more younger readers as the vocabulary and writing wasnt what i expected....too much "cute", "so cool" and "awesome" being used as adjectives.

1.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this but...
It was badly written, stereotypical rubbish which was loosely based on the ups and downs of Britney.

Don't bother.
