Considering the long, pain-staking process in selecting the nation's Pop Idol it seems a little impetuous to rush release the finished product with The Big Band Album--but at least public interest is still riding high. Will and Gareth's singles were quick and simple with record-breaking results but listening to this release you can't help wondering if they should have spent a little more time rehearsing and recording it.
Thirteen tracks of big band standards feature the 10 finalists of the show each doing their bit. Will, Gareth and Zoe each get an extra slice of the pie and lucky for them as Will's performance on "Beyond the Sea" pales in comparison to his second effort just as Zoe's fantastic "I've Got You Under My Skin" trounces her slightly disappointing "Get Happy".
For a cynic it would be easy to knock the pop idols as it's almost a national sport but they all prove they can sing with Darius, Aaron and Hayley turning in some great performances but for the most part they have been let down by poor production and the recording standards of a karaoke machine. Robbie Williams came under a lot of criticism for what people saw as his butchering of classic numbers on Swing When You're Winning but Pop Idol's Big Band Album is way short of the mark set by Robbie showing that you can't rush a project of this size and expect the same results. --David Trueman

This great cd marks the show that took England by storm! This essential pop idol cd called 'the big band album' is a must for any pop idol fanatic!
The highlights of the cd were surprisingly Rosie's ' cheek to cheek ', darius' ' let there be love ' and Zoe and Gareth unforgettable duet ' look at me now'. A couple of things that struck me were that Zoe finished fourth on pop idol, but she had 4 songs on the album! Will, who is 2002's pop idol only had 2 or 3 songs.
Although most of the songs were excellent, there were still some disappointments. For instance, take Aaron and Korben's singles.
If you buy this cd, play this cd on your cd player or stereo, and you will soon be gleaming with joy!
Two thumbs up, and a must for any pop idol fanatic!

Can't thank Simon Fuller enough for reviving the big band sound. At the PI concert I watched in delight as my two sons (13 and 10) marvelled at the Big Blue and came away inspired to work at their sadly neglected instruments (saxophone and trumpet respectively). The real stars of the CD are the Big Blue (Ben Castle especially), but there are strong vocal performances from Will, Gareth, Zoe, Hayley and Jessica. My sons tell me their favourites are Mack the Knife (Gareth), I've got you Under my Skin (Zoe) and I Won't Dance (Will), closely followed by That Ole Devil...(Hayley) and Ev'ry time we say Goodbye (Jessica - go girl at the Eurovision!). At the show Korben was a terrific dancer, so we love Night and Day too. How many of the pop greats from either side of the Atlantic could sound so good live and on CD? Can think of a few major names in pop who would never have got past the top 50 in the PI competition if asked to sing live. Thanks for a marvellous and thoroughly enjoyable album, and congratulations to all involved in the project.

I am enjoying all the tracks on this CD, but for me the one which outshines all the rest is Will's 'I Won't Dance'. He has somehow created a completely fresh rendition of this Fred Astaire classic, and it is breath-taking. Best listened to with headphones on, when you can hear the soulful quality of Will's voice. One of those songs which makes the hairs on the back of you neck stand on end!

A Great CD
I bought this in 2002 at the end of this series of Pop Idol......and in 2008 I still love listening to it. It never disappoints me. Good songs and good singers.

It's GGGreat!
This is a must for any Pop Idol fan. The final ten rise to the challenge with almost faultless consequences. Although I do admire Zoe's voice I would have prefered more Darius! Read more

Fantastic if you are a pop idol fan
Great album. Will's tracks are excellent and prove exactly why he won the contest. However, the presence of Zoe on two solo tracks and a duo is a bit suspect... Read more

The Big Blue are the unsung heroes of this album!!
Even though Will is fantastic on the CD, as are the other "Pop Idols", I feel that it is the Big Blue band that make the album. They are just amazing. Read more
