U2 formed in 1978 after Larry Mullen pinned a 'musicians wanted' ad to the notice board at Dublin's Temple Mount School. Adam Clayton had discovered rock'n'roll as a thirteen year old, buying his first acoustic guitar and then talking his parents into buying him a bass guitar. 'It just sounded good to me. Deep and fat and satisfying.'
From the beginning, U2 were ... Read more in Amazon's U2 Store

5.0 out of 5 stars LAST GREAT U2 ALBUM 19 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
For me POP is the last special U2 album. After this they just produced ordinary sounding music without that something special that made U2 so,well special.Such a shame because i always looked forward to every new release the band came out with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good 16 Nov 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I've never been much of a U2 fan, finding all of their albums, including the Joshua Tree incredibly tedious. But for some reason Pop appeals to me in strange way. It was Last night on Earth, which got me originally. It's catchy yet simple riff gliding over the contemporary backing. David Holmes assistance is invaluable in making this an experimental pop record. Better than the old stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars An underrated classic 28 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
It looks like ATYCLB is going to be the album that propels U2 back to their former commercial glory, but it really should have been this album. Let's not forget it got some of the strongest reviews of their career and also achieved respectable sales of about 6-7 million copies. The album excels in combining hints of old U2 with modern production and dance textures. The tracks are so good that they deserve to be reviewed individually.
N.B. The number in brackets after each track is marks out of ten
Discotheque - This is one of the most amazing U2 songs ever. The guitar riffs, dance rhythms and vocals are brilliantly mixed together. The song was also a No.1 hit. (10)
Do you feel loved - Some amazing electronic effects and a dance beat are mixed with an Even Better Than The Real Thing-esque guitar riff. Brilliant! (9)
Mofo - This track contains the best rhythms that U2 have ever produced. The electronic effects are direct and irresistibly catchy over the complex dance rhythms. (10)
If God Will Send His Angels - This is definitely the U2 of old mixed with some modern production techniques. The Edge uses some guitar riffs that make this track sound like it could fit on to Achtung Baby. The simplicity makes this sound like the One of this album. (9)
Staring At The Sun - The best track on the album. Once again this is the U2 of old mixed with modern production. The acoustic/electric mix of guitars is gorgeous and the tune is brooding and reflective. (10)
Last Night On Earth - This is the rockiest song on the album and once again like the U2 of old with its soaring guitars. (10)
Gone - This song exhibits U2's gift to write a gorgeous melody. The synths are beautifully layered when the chorus begins. The melody is gorgeous while the vocals are soaring.

5.0 out of 5 stars POP the classic album way ahead of its time. 31 July 2010
Format:Audio CD
Hello readers,

Ok personaly i think POP is an absolutly brillient album,
A masterpiece, Deffinatly worth a rating of 5 stars, well thats my opinion anyway,
And i would recomend buying this album to anyone.
It realy is a work of musical brillience, Just like a lot of albums that have been released by U2 such as ,

Ive been a fan of U2 for a decade now, And i realy do think there the best at what they do, And i think there the best band in the world today.

Ive been listening to the album POP, And playing it over and over again since i first brought it 5 years ago,
And it must of took at least 3 months in total for this 12 track masterpiece of an album to finaly get under my skin and fully get to grips with it, And thats the trick with this album and just like all the other U2 albums that i mentioned before, You,ve got to listen to it and listen to it and keep listening to it and hopefully you should see the light.

At the end of the day its an album thats over 13 years old, And way ahead of its time and it will continue to stand the test of time for years and years to come and like i said before POP is yet again another work of musical brillience released by U2.

Thankyou for taking the time to read this review, I hope it was helpfull to you if you are considering buying this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Glam Rock for the 90s.... 19 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If the glam rockers of the 1970s could come back now, after the musical changes from the last two decades, someone like Slade would be releasing singles like those on POP. Though to say that the whole album can be generalised like this would be wrong.
The most noticable difference in U2 since their late 1980s albums has been the difference in 'mood' in their songs. Gone were the love songs, and small political messages towards the US, now the band were digging at commercialism and consumerism. Along with this change, Larry Mullen Jr (the U2 Drum machine) has evolved with the times, and this is very noticable on POP - it's U2 to a different beat.
The songs... aha, what was that 'Discotheque' all about? Well, it was OK wasn't it? 'Please', 'God will send his angels', 'staring at the sun'... You've probably heard them. However, 'Miami' and 'Mofo' could be the most experimental songs on there, both with beats to die for and 'sing-a-long-a whatever' lyrical mix.
Basically, some people will be disapointed with the fact that this album, along with Achtung Baby and Zooropa, is not the Joshua Tree. However, it isn't 1987 - so U2 should be commended for their way of making new music, and not the way they don't make the same past successes all over again....

5.0 out of 5 stars An under appreciated classic
Not one of U2's best. But give it another listen. I am growing to love it. Zoverstocks are the best when it comes to pre-used cd's.
