Australia released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, SYNOPSIS: Originally shown in two parts, this massive TV movie adaptation of C. David Heymann's biography stars Farrah Fawcett as Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton. With two failed marriages to her credit, 29-year-old Barbara marries film idol Cary Grant (James Read), the first man who loves her for herself and not her millions. This alliance goes the way of all of Barbara's romances; there will be four more marriages, the last when Ms. Hutton is 50-years-old. Shutting herself away in her Tangiers mansion, Barbara begins her long descent into the world of booze and drugs. Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story merely skims the surface of its subject's stormy life, but Farrah Fawcett's performance commands the audience's attention throughout the film's daunting 240 minutes. SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Emmy Awards, Golden Globes, ...Poor Little Rich Girl

Fascinating 17 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
Based upon the written biography by Heymann (available on Amazon also) this is a fascinating portrayal of the late Barbara Hutton by the sadly recently deceased Farrah Fawcett. Farrah is superb in the role - playing it with great balance as an actor, convincingly and without making the viewer feel particularly sorry for, or anti it's subject (she does come across as quite a feisty character at times.)

Certainly one does feel a certain amount of sympathy for Ms Hutton - who got married about seven times - mostly disastrously. After all, being just about the richest woman in the world during the time in which she lived, might sound very appealing on the surface, but when you cannot be sure if people like you for yourself or quite simply like your money then life can't be much fun. Ms Hutton is portrayed from her childhood as a very lonely, emotionally deprived little girl, which leads to a similar way of existence as an adult. Her story is ultimately tragic as well as intriguing: hence the notion of her as the "poor little rich girl". Certainly, if the portrayal is a true one she was subject to much abuse of different kinds by the people with whom she associated.

Well worth putting into one's film collection and watching again and again - mainly because Ms Hutton's life was so apparently complicated romantically and it becomes extremely complicated as she goes from being a Princess to a Countess etc. etc. The settings/locations are very lavish and enjoyable, the costumes and make up/hairstyles are a delight to see. Following the fantasy of being "super-rich" is always a popular theme, and in this case the fantasy is based upon reality.

All in all an enjoyable, well-made "biopic" with well-depicted themes of life's miseries (see my "tags") to which all people can be prey no matter what their financial circumstances.

This is an absolute gem from the late 80's US television. I really appreciate the whole production in all the aspects, but what really caught my attention was the geat performance by the late Farrah Fawcett, she's fantastic as Barbara Hutton and proves here, once again ( See: Burning Bed, Extremities to name a few ) that she was much more than just a Charlie's Angel. It's money well spent.

Interesting film 21 May 2011

Very good film and very interesting. Farrah Fawcett did impersonate Barbara Hutton with great skill. I find it however impossible to feel sorry for the 'Poor Little Rich Girl'. Miss Hutton unfortunately lacked intelligence and was a despicably weak character...but the film is worth watching...if only once.
