Tarl, Shal and Ren return in the sequel to Pool of Radiance. The plot involves these characters and others seeking to save Phlan by restoring it to the surface of Toril and preventing its inhabitants from being consumed by the Pool of Darkness. This novel has some excellent additions to the original cast of characters. You have Militiades a suathe, heroic undead paladin undertaking one last quest for Tyr and druid cousins Talenthia and Andoralson combining to try to stave off evil. Evaine and Gamaliel are probably the most impressive partnership in the novel, as sorceress and feline familiar. Their interaction and telepathic link helps enrich the novel immensely. Pools of Darkness also has some excellent combat sections such as the werewolf ambush and the whole Militiades initial combat and introduction section. Quite a number of demonic monsters make an appearance in this novel including: spinagons, a succubus, abishai and a Pit Fiend orchestrating them and others. All in all, this novel is well worth a read.
