Product Description

Product Description

Raymond Chandler's private investigator Philip Marlowe (James Caan) seems to be turning over a new leaf with the advent of the 1960s: he is newly married to a billionaire's daughter, and relocates to the desert town of Poodle Springs. However, when a fellow detective is killed, Marlowe finds himself involved in a complicated case of murder, gambling, bigamy, pornography and dual identity, all or some of which are connected to his prosperous father-in-law.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caan shines as ageing Marlowe. 20 Feb 2002
Format:DVD
One of the great detectives (Marlowe)in a story written by a great writer of the 40s (Chandler)completed by a great contemporary writer (Robert B Parker)featuring one the great actors of the past few years (Caan). Set in the 60s Caan as Marlowe investigates a series of murders which feature madness, greed, lust, love and jealousy. On the way he picks up a young wife and succeeds in annoying all who cross his path, including his new father in law. Poodle Springs is an easy on the eye detective yarn of the type we have seen many times before, but when it is as well performed, written and photographed as this it comes across as fresh as an orchid buttonhole in the lapel of a choir boy. Watch and enjoy!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Chandler 14 May 2011
Format:DVD
The books of Chandler have been filmed many times. Some are cinema classics and quite a few are pretty rum. This one unfortunately floats closer to the bottom than the top of the range. It looks pretty, probably too pretty for the period. Most of the acting is satisfactory but Caan appears to be going by the numbers. The drama, tension; mystery call it what you like never builds. You wonder at the end what the fuss was about. One for a wet Sunday afternoon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chandler Mystery Flick Updated 26 Mar 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
i was intrigued by the fact that i did not even know that this film had been made. i knew the book which was a Robert Parker (Spenser's creator) adaaptation from a Chandler draft. Any Chandler stuff though is a must read and a must see for me. How does it stack up? Well it is no Big Sleep,(what was the chance of that?) but this is a good attempt. Caan is no Bogie, frankly he is not a Robert Mitchum or even Elliot Gould but he does well and the film while creaky is still a good attempt. i liked it and i'm glad i bought it but it is an addition to the film noir canon that will probably in years to come be highly sought after just because of the peculiarity of its origins and star.
