This is different from "The Art of Ponyo...", the book isn't a documentary of the film with concept drawings and interviews, instead it is the film in picture form - though there is text too to tell the story.

This is a great book for younger Ghibli fans, whereas "The Art of Ponyo..." is better enjoyed by older fans. The story is brought to life by use of vibrant images which are eye-poppingly clear and bright. You tend to find that after reading a portion of the story you get a few pages of pictures. This is great for bed-time stories with your children as you can read for a few moments before talking about the pictures to marry the two together.

The story is something of a twist on the classic `The Little Mermaid' and is a visually and spiritually rewarding book. Fan's of Japanese style animation and character drawings will find the illustrations vivid and the narrative relatively simple without being childish.

In a nutshell: Not your run-of-the-mill storybook, this is something that bit special. Older children will no doubt love to read this by themselves, whereas younger children will find this makes for a brilliant bed-time book. Reading this book before watching the film will make the film experience more magical. Reading it afterwards will enable your children to enjoy the familiar scenes again and again. It's not often you come across a book so visually striking.

...which is fine if you're an American reader! :-) As a British reader, I did find the Americanisms in the narrative a bit intrusive (obviously I'm less bothered by those in the dialogue, because the English language version of the film was US-produced). Otherwise, this is perfect - my son is in love with the film and with Ponyo herself, and the book takes you back into the world of the film effortlessly. There is a richness of stills and frames from the film, and they're displayed inventively, giving it the feel of a graphic novel.

One thing that might disappoint a die-hard fan of the film - Sosuke's mother, Lisa, has a very human and understandable strop in the film, when her husband fails to return as expected. This is almost entirely left out of the book - no grabbing a beer, no sulking, no getting Sosuke to signal 'Bug Off!' at his dad. Presumably to protect the tender sensibilities of children, but given that it's in the film, I think it's a shame it was censored from the book of the film.

For that reason, and because the American narrative irritates me, 4 stars rather than 5.

This book will really surprise you - amazing artwork and the full story make this much more than just "a picture book". Anyone who has seen the movie should really consider ordering the book - it is just as magical as the movie!

Ponyo! Ponyo, Ponyo fishy in the sea! 8 Oct. 2010

I bought this for my 3 1/2 year old son for Christmas. He loves watching the movie Ponyo, over and over again so I thought that the book would be a great change, since he also loves reading too. I am surprised by this book, its more than a picture book, it actually has some dialogue and story that you can read along to, and follow just like the movie. I can't wait to read it to my son, he probably already has the story memorized, and this book follows the movie exactly. It's just as enjoyable, if not moreso than the movie, the pictures are very nice and they are scenes from the movie. I would recommend to anyone that enjoys this movie.

Ponyo picture book 17 Nov. 2009

A wonderful book full of beautiful illustrations that any child who has fallen in love with the "Ponyo" film, its main characters and their stories will cherish. The page layouts are fun and easy to follow. The book design falls somewhere in between a young readers chapter book and a japanese manga. Both of my children, 2 and 5 years of age, repeatedly requests that we read them this book which has quickly become one of their favorite bedtime stories. A must-have book if you're a Ghibli Studios fan and if your child loves the "Ponyo" characters and their story.

I ordered the book before the movie release because we couldn't wait anymore. The book is wonderful, the pictures are all you would expect from Miyazaki. Ponyo belongs right there with Totoro and Kiki. We cannot wait to see the movie itself !!!

Awesome book! 27 Sept. 2011

A wonderful hardcover book, full of colorful pages and perfect gift for any child in love with the little Ponyo.
The book follows the story of the movie 100%. There are also text lines that follow the story and they are easy to read.
So beautifully made, high quality paper. My son does not leave it a second. It was just a wonderful gift, bought here on Amazon for only 14 dollars and free shipping.
Worth every penny.
A must if you have a little Ponyo lover!

PS: I add that my son prefers the book to the movie now. This shift from video to reading time was the most amazing result.
