These two large volumes will be intelligible only to musicians, musicologists, and perhaps Medieval historians, but if you fit one of those categories, they are indispensable and, for $40.00, quite a bargain. In Volume One, Professor Karp discusses the historical context of Aquitanian polyphony, the notation used in the two chief manuscripts associated with Compostela and Saint Martial, the conflicting interpretations of that notation by modern scholars, and his own broad hypothesis for interpretative transcription. The second volume includes Professor Karp's transcriptions of the whole surviving repertoire into modern barred notation.

For everyone else, the best I can offer are the two most convincing ensembles performing this repertoire - "Sequentia" and "Ensemble Gilles Binchois".

Sequentia's "Vox Iberica" series of three CDs is superb. It begins with "Sons of Thunder: music from the Codex Calixtinus."

Ensemble Gilles Binchois has a 2-CD package of re-releases, called Le Manuscrit du Puy. That's the original title of one CD; the other was "Les Premières Polyphonies Françaises".
