A treat from Polygon,
By david moncur "Davie" (Dundee, Angus, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Polygirls: The Songbirds of Polygon (Audio CD)
Here's a taster of the female artistes that were releasing records on Alan Freeman's Polygon label during the period 1950 - 1955. There are some very big names here, Kathie Kay, who sang with Billy Cotton's band on his tv shows in the 50s and 60s (and who died recently), Eva Bartok, the amazing Dorothy Squires, and a very young and somewhat different Petula Clark! There are a host of other treats too; ladies I'd never heard of, but am glad that I have found.
As the music of this period has become public domain, there is a rush of material of this type. It's cheap to produce, and there's a fair size market for it. Unfortunately, on occasions, the only motive for releasing it is to make money, and the releases are of poor overall quality, with bad sound, and no, or misleading, inlay notes. NOT SO IN THIS CASE. Care has been taken to provide the very best quality recordings. (Where these simply are not available [the four tracks of Marie Benson], we are forewarned by the compiler.) Care and attention to detail has also been provided in the preparation of inlay notes which are extensive and include contemporary photographs, reviews, and a shedload of interesting facts. It's such a pleasure to get this kind of quality from what is, after all, a budget release. I'd recommend this to lovers of 50s popular music. It's an excellent way to learn more about the period from the compiler, someone who is obviously a devotee, and to hear, perhaps for the first time, some lesser known voices along with big stars.

The lost Parrot label?,
By Richard "Alice Collector" (Blackpool England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Polygirls: The Songbirds of Polygon (Audio CD)
That was a joke-Parrot is an American label which licensed Tom Jones product in the 60s.
This one though can be seen as possibly the first Indie label soon to be taken off by a major-Pye Records. Founded by Australians it was the next stopping off place for Pet Clark after EMI dropped her in 1950 though I believe the songs were purchased later by Pye.The label's only hits were by Pet Clark with The Little Shoemaker and Majorca. The CD kicks off with an Austrlalian singer Marie Benson who was later in the Stargazers. Also from Down Under is Annette Klooger who cut a number of singles for Decca without troubbling a chart. 27 songs a foldout booklet of 10 minutes reading and with rare photos ,news cuttings and scans of labels and sheet music. What more could you ask it to do? It doesn't cost much so get it bought if you like to hear girl singers from the 50s
