Wonderful trash 12 Nov 2008
Format:DVD
..A lovely, inane story with the typical cast of oddballs and unlikely, loveable protagonists. Thinking about it, John Waters is almost like an American Almodovar (circa Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). Polyester isn't as funny as W.O.T.V, but still enjoyable. Really needs the Odorama card for the full effect...

Ah, life in the suburbs. But life is a dead end for 300 pound Francine Fishpaw. Her mother is a shriveled little witch,"..good lord Francine!! You've put on another 20 pounds!!", her children are screwed up deliquents, her husband the "porno king" is messing around with his slutty, viscious secretary. Even the family pet dog, Bonkers, hates her. Thank goodness for her obese, though retarded bestfriend, Cuddles. Francine at last finds love (not) from Todd Tommorrow. I love this movie and desperately wish I had the Odorama card. It's like a satire of a 1950's corny soap opera. Good job, John Waters!!

This is not John Waters' best effort, but it is his turning point, combining the sick, vile humour of his early work (Pink Flamingos,Female Trouble). And the campy, kitschy feel of his much later films (Hairspray, Serial Mom.)

It has Divine as Francine Fishpaw, a wife who is getting harrased by her neighbours, and her family. Her husband, owns an adult movie theatre, her son is a chemical-sniffin', foot stompin' psychopath, her daughter is a disobediant, teenage, delinquent. All of these things seem to be driving poor, poor Francine to an early grave. Until she meets Todd Tommorrow (Tab Hunter), who seems to be the perfect man for her....

This film has all the elements of John Waters' works: - Bad Acting, A Badly written script, and the American nightmare, in a normal suburb of Baltimore.

When the film was originally released in 1981, it came with Waters' patented "Odorama" cards, but, with this new video release, they are, sadly, absent. Leaving a lot of opital reframing, and jumpy cuts, within the whole movie.

This is an excuse just to see Divine, in a distraught, whining state. It's more nasty and spiteful, than sick and funny. It's not good entertainment, but it's watchable, in a good way.

I recommend the American version of the video more, for you get an "Odorama" card with it...
