When can I start?
I ordered this film on the fact that my girlfriend hadn't seen it and I hadn't watched it for years, and when it arrived I must admit I was quite a bit worried that the film may have become a tad dated, but thankfully that wasn't to be.
Immediately as the film starts you grow to like the family, especially the main character Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke), a pretty, sweet, angelic girl who has that lovable 'aaawww' factor. So when her pet bird dies and things start to take a turn for the worse in the household you are instantly enthralled as to what will happen to your new friends, the perfect American family.
At first its fun, the mother (portrayed excellently by Jo Beth Williams) uses this new force as a kind of game, but when she shows the father (Craig T Nelson) the goings on in the kitchen he becomes quite the sceptic, and that's when it starts to go downhill. Objects are moving around, strange vibrations in the house, and it seems that the target of the spirit is poor, little Carol Anne.
Psychic are called in to record the goings on which leads to the introduction of the eccentric Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein), but I'll say no more of her, you'll just have to watch the film.
So, without going through the whole order of the film and making this seem like a synopsis rather than a review, I'd like to point out that this movie has it all. A touch of humour (typical Spielberg), a lot of thriller and a little bit of charm. It's scary at parts and can be a little unnerving at others, which is all down to great performances from the whole cast. Each actor/actress plays their role superbly, including the brilliant Beatrice Straight as one of the psychic investigators, and its a classic case of 'You couldn't think of anyone else to play that part...'.

Poltergeist can now be regarded as a genuine horror classic. It's ingrained not just in horror cinema but in cinema itself.

Masterfully directed by Tobe Hooper, with a possible helping hand of Steven Spielberg- Poltergeist draws you in. Not much happens for the first half hour as we are introduced to beautiful sunny suburbia- and then all hell breaks loose.

For me the beauty in the film is not always the horror, but the characters. All of the main cast even the kids got plenty of time to express themselves- Something unimaginable in todays films.

Sure sometimes the film gets a little too overworked and the actors can fall into the easy trap of hamming it up- and there are some funny moments within all the chaos.

It's very interesting nonetheless- and I did notice the running theme of adults acting like kids and kids acting like adults.

It's actually quite a thoughtful movie and even has an odd warmth to it. Though there are a few scary moments. The final fifteen minutes are played out to such effect, that one could call it pure horror.

I dread to see the remake which has been announced. I'm quite sure it will be everything that this film wasn't.

Poltergeist is an essential purchase to your collection, a classic film in every sense.

There have been 100s of films made since this from the early 1980s about ghosts taking over a family/house or a child etc.
Poltergeist was one of the pioneers of the genre. It still holds up very well today, maybe there isn't the gore, the blood, guts and sheer fear of modern horror movies but it has a great story, great acting and great special effects.
I enjoyed watching this again after many years. It is a classic Spielberg film up there with E.T and other such films.

Enjoy.....

It appears the original-idea-free zone that is Hollywood is about to besmirch the memory of yet another of my all-time favourite movies. If you are a lot younger than me it's just possible that this wonderful example of the horror/suspence genre has slipped under your radar and, if that is the case, I strongly urge you to add this title to your collection. Directed by Tobe Hooper (though many claim the hand of producer Steven Speilberg is clearly visible) and starring the charming Jo-Beth Williams and Craig T Nelson, this is a slow-burner, as it seeks to build an image of loving family life in the first act, which it subsequently sets out to all but destroy by the third. I won't give away any plot details (don't understand why people do that in their reviews!), all I will say is that it's wonderfully acted, expertly photographed and features one the most eerie, spellbinding, pulse-pounding, ear-splitting soundtracks ever committed to celluloid by the late and much lamented Jerry Goldsmith.

I recently bought Poltergeist 1 as I hadnt seen it for years but I found it still gave me chills! The sequel is just as scary and actually has more of a plot. I especially like the creepy Julian Beck who has a face to give you nightmares! There is a sad bit where Heather Rourke says she doesnt want to grow up because of course she never did. A properly scary film which hasn't dated at all.

I am always a bit sceptical when buying a Blu Ray version of an old film, of how the quality is going to be. This film is great on Blu Ray. The picture quality really only falls down when you have the scenes with the "flickering" of the TV, but the quality in the rest of the film is great.

This film was one of the first we watched on VHS when we got our first Video player in the early 80's, and didn't think I'd be watching it in HD all these years later.

The disc has some special features about Poltergeist intrusions, but haven't watched them yet, so can't comment.

Would recommend this Blu Ray disc without a doubt.
