REVIEWS

"An utterly charming story of the ups and downs of an Englishman who tries to assimilate into a completely different world, as he begins married life with a Polish girl" - Cooltura, Polish weekly

"A colorful introduction to Poland for readers who know little of the country... details the pleasures and frustrations that lie in wait for a visiting foreigner" - Warsaw Voice

"Full of the kind of anecdotes that anyone who has moved to Poland from the UK will recognise instantly... also worth taking a look at if you’re new to life in Poland" - Krakow Post

"A sympathetic insight into Polish society... Jonathan Lipman has produced a charming and informative book" - Hubert Zawadzki, co-author, A Concise History of Poland

ABOUT THE BOOK

Are you travelling to Poland - perhaps for Euro 2012 - and wish to know more about the Poles you’ll encounter?

Have you ever wondered what makes your Polish plumber or cleaner or waitress tick?

Are you fascinated by this country of forty million, rich in natural beauty, cultured, and famous for its people’s wanderlust?

What book do you pick for background and insight? A superficial travel guide? A dry history book?

No! You need the genre-busting Polska Dotty. Follow the hilarious exploits of a newly-wed English lad and Polish girl as they settle in Poland and encounter corrupt Polish police, counterfeit software sellers, and scammy private doctors - as well as more salubrious characters: a doting landlord, a romantic language teacher, and work colleagues intent on educating the author on everything from Polish grammar... to sanitation at the Warsaw courts.

Polska Dotty informs about every aspect of Polish society including its work ethic, family values, and the Polish character itself.

This is a funny, heartfelt, sparkling read, a touching portrayal of an Englishman’s integration into Polish life.

Highly Enjoyable 1 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I heard the author doing a radio interview about this book a couple of weeks ago and was intrigued enough to download a copy. I must say this really is a very witty and observant read, i thoroughly enjoyed this.. Delivered in perfect sized chapters, each with its own mini story, it's well narrated, providing sufficient anecdote, social commentary, the odd lesson in history and manners, all told with abundant humour. Definitely worth getting - even if you have no interest in Poland or even going there, you will love the hilarious tale of how to avoid speeding fines from the Polish police! PG

Very enjoyable read 3 Jan 2012

This book is a blend of personal reminiscence, cultural exploration and travel log. It's great fun, well written and a good alternative to the usual "lonely Planet" "Rough Guide" travel books. The author obviously loved Poland while he was there but does not shy away from telling it as it is. Nice little sketches as well.

Engaging and Educational 9 Feb 2012

This is a cute story of cultural differences. The author is an Englishman who is married to a Polish woman. The book relates the story of their life in Poland - his attempts to learn Polish, understand the culture and 'what makes the Poles tick", integrate with her family, and learn about the country. It's a journey of discovery for both the author and his wife as he learns more about his adopted country and she sees her native country through a foreigner's eyes.

There's a great deal of underlying humor in some of the cultural mishaps that the author experiences, but it's never of the 'Polish joke' variety. The author is frequently perplexed by some of the customs he encounters, but he always strives to learn about them in a very respectful manner. Along the way, he provides a great deal of interesting information about modern Poland as well as the historical Poland. The reader comes away with a much better understanding of the trials and tribulations of the Poles as a nation, and an increased respect for them.

Highly recommended - this is light, fun, and easy to read, yet provides some very interesting tidbits of information and background on the Polish culture.

Note on Kindle formatting: Good. There were a few minor issues, but nothing impacted readability. There are pen & ink drawings scattered throughout, and they displayed well on the Kindle.
