Product Description

For 'Downton Abbey' fans! Scandal, romance and intrigue in a grand old English country house: Swallowcliffe Hall, home to the aristocratic Vye family and the staff who look after them. When Polly Perkins starts work at the Hall, she finds it hard to learn the manners and etiquette expected of her. Life at Swallowcliffe is a whirl of shooting parties, picnics and balls, and an army of servants is required to look after the guests. Housemaids are meant to be seen and not heard, and nobody takes much notice of the quiet young girl who lights their fires and empties their slops. But Polly is sharp-eyed and quick-witted, and gradually she uncovers a secret lurking in the shadows of the Hall's elegant rooms - a secret that will end up breaking her heart. When a young American heiress arrives to stay at Swallowcliffe, Polly must decide whether the time has come for her to reveal what she knows.

'At last I wiped my face and walked slowly back to the servants' hall. The family and their guests had begun filing out, already in pairs, for their procession into dinner... What if one of them had seen me, and even happened to glance at my face? "She has probably had some squabble with the parlourmaids," this person might have thought, "or perhaps the housekeeper has had reason to speak sharply to her, or someone left a smaller tip than she was expecting. That is the trouble with servants these days. They are never satisfied!"
I was very bitter, which you will no doubt understand and forgive.'

I have just finished reading Polly's Story for the second time.

Polly is a lovely, warm character who is so full of life she almost jumps off the page. Her story starts as she arrives at Swallowcliffe Hall to be the new under housemaid for Lord Vye and his family. At first she struggles to fit in but then she learns the rhythms and rules of the house and eventually falls in love with her new home.

Woven in with Polly's story are the joys and sorrows of the other residents of Swallowcliffe Hall - in spite of the conventions and rules of the time the lives of the Vyes are observed, commented upon and sometimes intertwined with those of the servants. But what this book does best is to give an amazing insight into the world of the servant - life was hard for them and, if you lost your position, life was even harder in the outside world. This book is well researched and not afraid to address the social problems and upheaval of the time.

This book is something of a family favourite at our house. My partner enjoyed reading it and I read some of it to my young daughter at bedtime one night (you have to grab reading time where you can!) and the next day she requested it again.

This book is not only written with excellent text and dialogues, but also filled with true emotions. The characters seem alive, in front of us as we read. I could not stop reading, I had to finish and now that I did, I miss Polly and the other characters. Great book.

Loved this book! I actually didn't realise that there was an order to the Swallowcliffe books so i actually read Isobels story first but it's not essential to read 1-3 really in that order just makes abit more sense as they follow 3 generations of the same family. Polly is the mother of Grace and grandmother of Isobel in the later books. Pollys story though starts as she is a young girl starting out in her working life in the big house called "Swallowcliffe hall".
Having watched and loved 2 series of Downton Abbey this book reminded me of the storylines in that quite alot. I liked to read about life back in the early 1900's when life as a servant in a big house was extremely tough. This story is told very well of one such servant Polly. Now to start on Graces story. 10/10
