5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait.., 10 Nov 2008
I read a review of this book in one of the Sunday supplements & was immediately interested. I love books with quirky characters & also books which take you into an unfamiliar world. This book covers both- it is beautifully written & takes you convincingly into the head of a misfit girl who escapes her dysfunctional & rejecting family and makes her home in the woods. This book bridges the gap between 'us & them' in quite a disturbing way. It reminds us of our common humanity, not in a preachy way, but just by entering her world with her.
There is a strong narrative throughout the book with lots of interesting survival tips (should you be tempted!) but the prose is very descriptive- almost poetic. In many ways the book feels like a classic- like a modern Huck Finn. I will keep this book- beautiful in the hardback edition- and re-read it & recommend it to friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning first novel, 10 Aug 2009
By D. T. McDonnell - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pollard (Paperback)
I'm surprised this book hasn't received more fanfare as it is one of the finest I have read in a long time. The main character is not only an outcast from society, but, from a very young age, is an outcast from her entire family. As a teenager she finds refuge in the local wood, eventually settling there permanently. But she is not without human needs for love and companionship, and it is these fragile relationships that provide much of the poignancy of the book. The other subtext of the novel is the threatened existence of the wood itself as developers begin marching in to destroy it. It is lyrical and elegantly written--a book I plan to read again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful little book, 6 Nov 2009
By Ms. M. P. Reid "Reidy" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pollard (Paperback)
I found this book utterly captivating and I agree with the reviewer above that it didn't recieve nearly enough praise or publicity. I tried to but a copy to give as a gift in Waterstones recently and not only did they not have it in stock, the assistant informed me that they had NEVER had it in stock. This is a great pity.
The natural world is beautifully and sensitively evoked in this book and its heroine is unlike any other, practical yet innocent, clever and resourceful, yet blind to the world and its ways.
It's a very humane treatment of the kind of life society usually fails entirely to notice, or value. I loved it.
