Book Description

An accessible introduction to politics from David Runciman, Professor of Politics at Cambridge University. The first title in the IDEAS IN PROFILE series - world class introductions to topics that matter, with enhanced ebooks containing animated images by the team behind RSA Animates.

Product Description

In the first title of an exciting new series one of the world's leading political scientists asks the big questions about politics: what is it, why we do we need it and where, in these turbulent times, is it heading? From the gap between rich and poor to the impact of social media, via Machiavelli, Hobbes and Weber, Runciman's comprehensive short introduction is invaluable to those studying politics or those who want to know how life in Denmark became more comfortable than in Syria.

Fusing animation and images from the award winning animators behind RSA Animates, beautifully adapted to both print and digital formats, the Ideas in Profile series boldly reinvents what introductions can and should be in the twenty-first century. Concise, clear, relevant, entertaining, original and global in scope, Politics makes essential reading - and viewing for students and general readers.

It is very readible and well put together. However it is not comprehensive in its treatment of its subject. there are other political theories other than those of Hobbes and Machievelli which might have been presented. for instance there is the Aristotelian school.

5.0 out of 5 stars EDUCATING & INTRIGUING! 24 Oct 2014
By Dr. J. Gold - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition with Audio/Video
A deceptively easily to read and very coherent outline of the main historical political processes. The straight-forwardness of the text owes much to the author's abundant knowledge and all round comprehension of almost all aspects of his subject but this should not be confounded with simplicity. Indeed, Runciman raises several interesting and novel ideas for the reader to question: again and again, he raises and then questions les idées reçues thereby probing the reader to question the tenets which have been laid down and thereby understand the fundamentals.
The author is, incontrovertibly, a man of scholarship; but, more importantly, he is a profound and singular thinker.

4.0 out of 5 stars A smug text 11 Sep 2014
By Rupert C. Lewis - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A useful, easy to read text on politics. Suffers from blindness to the colonial and imperial dimension of the British state. Analysis is therefore far too smug.
