More About the Author

John Donoghue never set out to be to be a writer ... he wanted to be a sailor ...and a soldier ...and a policeman.

When he left school, he ran away to sea ...or more accurately, caught the train and joined the Royal Navy. After six years on the high seas, he transferred to the Army, serving Queen and Country throughout the Cold War.

However, when it began to thaw, he took this as my cue to move on. Leaving the army as a Captain, he joined an international security organisation, although it was more budgets and spread-sheets than James Bond and Pussy Galore.

Bored, and in search of more fun and excitement, he handed back his company car, expense account and keys to the executive toilets and joined the police force where he is currently a serving police officer.

He has written three books.

'Police, Crime & 999' covers a year in his life as a front line response officer.

'Police, Lies & Alibis' is the follow up, following the further adventures of 'E' shift.

"We are the cops who respond initially to the 999 (911) calls with the blue lights flashing and sirens blaring. It's your all access view behind the scenes of what REALLY happens in the police."

Both police books have won the coveted People's Book Awards - voted for by members of the public.

Genre: Humour, True crime, Autobiography

'Shakespeare My Butt!' is the tale of his military service on land and sea, how he played Moses to the dog world with 'The Ten Commandments of Dog' and finally, his odyssey around the bizarre named places in Britain - towns and villages with names such as 'No Place', 'Pity Me', 'Wetwang' and 'Twatt'.

Genre: Humour, Military, Travel, Autobiography (NOTE: make sure you get the updated version with Che Sweep on the cover)

It was infamously described in a review as 'Bill Bryson on magic mushrooms'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious 2 Feb 2014
Absolutely hilarious! Being a retired officer I could place myself in many of the stories.
Loved it. Well worth a read even for non-Police. It will give you an idea of life in the Police. A job like no other!

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb read 14 Feb 2014
In his book Police, Lies & Alibis John Donoghue depicts the everyday working life of a policeman. He tells the story in a way that made me smile and even laugh out loud. However, his use of humour does not detract from the stressful nature of the job nor the vulnerability of some of the people the police deal with on a daily basis. It was a joy to read. Once started I knew that it was a book I would need to read through to the last words - words that left me with a smile upon my face.

Another brilliant read from one of my new favourite authors!
After reading Police,Crime & 999 I couldn't wait to get started on Police,Lies & Alibis and I was not disappointed. Over the last couple of weeks PC Donoghue has kept both me and most of my work colleagues in fits of laughter as I read out what the residents of Sandford have been getting up to during my lunch breaks!
Although this book has a slightly more serious tone than Police,Crime & 999 there are still lots of laugh out loud moments and if you work with the general public, you will definitely be reading bits out to your colleagues.
I would most definitely recommend everyone to read both of John Donoghue's books about life on the force.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first encounter with a 'true story of a...' 19 Jan 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I've not read a book of this type before, so wasn't really sure if it was my kind of read. However, once I picked it up I struggled to put it back down again. The previous reviews informed me that this was a 'laugh a minute' and that I would probably laugh out loud. I did. However, I also got a sense of the challenges that John has faced as well as felt some of his fears, which he portrayed honestly. I got drawn in to his experiences as a police officer, and yes, some were really funny, others, which showed the real vulnerability of this job, made me stop and think. This book is extremely well written and cleverly done so too. There were quite a few sentences that I had to re-read because otherwise I would have missed the joke. I liked this!

There were certain sections that I felt the need to share. I was unable to do this successfully as I knew the ending - this meant I couldn't help but laugh out loud again, half way through, and completely ruin the story. If you think someone would appreciate hearing some of this work then I suggest you buy them their own copy and let them enjoy it first hand!
