Not many sequels out-do the original. The Godfather part 2, The Empire Strikes Back and now Police Academy 2: their first assignment. This film is a comic tour de force once again showcasing the considerable talents of Bubba Smith, David Graf and the hilarious Michael Winslow. But the film's central performance by the mighty Steve Guttenburg is its crowning glory. Guttenburg stamps his claim on the title greatest American actor of all time with this commanding, witty, and often deeply touching performance. The fact that he was denied a best actor Oscar was one of the greatest crimes in Hollywood history.
The film sees the plucky bunch reunited as fully fledged police officers ready to fight crime wherever it can be found. They learn some tough lessons along the way fighting a vicious criminal gang. Bob Goldthwaite plays Zed, a ruthless, hard as nails gang leader who terrorises the local neighbourhood. His exploration into the mind of a bitter, twisted human addicted to civil disobedience is at once terrifying and heart wrenching. The film asks the question; what is the nature of evil? The Police Academy crew soon learn that the real world of policing is a dangerous place.
Follow Mahoney's bunch of lovable misfits as they clean up the streets in this funny, poignant rollercoaster of a film. Greatest cop film of its era? I think so.
